speakers in door cards...

Over the last few years I've seen various P6's with radio speakers mounted in the door cards... First of all is this easy to do? Was this done originally (I guess not)? Does anybody have any snaps of their door mounted speakers to share so I can get a feel for whether I'd like to do it to my P6? If I was to do it I was thinking of getting some of the chrome ringed speakers from an old Jaguar XJ40 (scrap yard fodder now unfortunately) or such like as they would fit in quite nicely I think... I imagine it is pretty simple to do but I am a novice so I may need to entrust it to someone else if I decide to take the plunge!!!

Hiya.
When the cars were ordered new the dealers fitted whatever radio system/8 track you wanted!
So yes speakers fitted into the lower front corner of the doors is an easy job to do.
A fader switch was also utilised as well if req!
There were Motorola,JVC,Radiomobile, square ones, and round ones used.
Some owners wouldnt dare cut holes out for speakers, saying it destroys the originality, but as they were an original option this is nonsense!
I have some in my car and also 2 rear wedge type shelf mounted speakers as well and the sound from all 4 speakers is great!
Will dig out and post a pic or 2 this eve!

I look forward to seeing that, many thanks...! I think as long as you add accesories in period (i.e 1970's stereo/speakers in a 1970's motor...) it doesn't matter if you have to cut into a door card or a rear parcel shelf here and there. If it's in keeping with the era and vibe of the car then it's all good in my book...

I fitted mine in the doors, not that difficult a job. Just be careful with the door card as they can get fragile with age.

I also used rubber tubes to fit between door and main body which I got of a hatch back from the scrap yard - hatch back ones are longer and are better as the P6 door gap is fairly wide. I can't remember which car exactly but it may have been a 206 - you'll need to find 2 cars obviously.

Having done the job a couple of years ago I really wish I had put tweaters in the dash, will be doing this once I have all my other jobs out of the way - some time soon no doubt ! I was thinking of those small round ones which would involve cutting a hole in the dash laminate on both sides.

hey all what is the best size speakers to put on the doors at the front as i only got 1 at the front and the back 1

Hi all,
I fitted a modern JVC CD unit to my red car and fitted speakers under the front seats. However, I think there is another option. I'm currently working on a project where the architects don't want to see anything on their ceilings apart from lights (can't even fit conventional smoke detection). We are fitting plaster-in PA speakers. As the name suggests they are mounted behind the plaster board, a panel is fixed over them, and skimmed in, with no holes. In some areas they are behind aluminium panels with slots. Why not do the same in a car? You could fit them in the doors, cut a circular hole in the backing, either leave the outer vinyl covering as is or drill a circle of discrete holes. I'll speak to my PA/AV supplier today and see what he thinks.
Regards,
Dave

That's what I did on my last V8. It worked quite well. With no holes in the vinyl, it killed the top end response a bit but with a neat pattern of holes punched in it, it sounded great and looked like Rover did it. :)

That sounds great... Do you have any pictures of your handywork...?

for a few ideas

Regardless of wether it was a standard option or not speakers in P6 door cards look ghastly!!! I could not bring my self to do it, and in a former life I used to do that sort of thing day in and day out for a living but no way would i have ever liked to do or felt comfortable doing that on a p6, paying client or not.

It's all down to personal preference at the end of the day... If I was to do anything along these lines (which I'm not 100% sure about yet) I would be using parts available at the time when the car was new (1974) to give it an air of authenticity... I must say people do things to old cars that could make me cry sometimes but if it's tasteful and in keeping then I think (and that is just my opinion) it's all ok...

I have yet to see a tasteful origional door speaker installation in a p6, I think it could be done but that you would need to do a custom facia using the same skin materials that the door has on it and a custom molding that enhances the look rather than the effect that a standard speaker grill has. Modern cars are designed with the door speaker as an intergral part of the styling whilst with the Rover this was never given consideration (in my mind anyway) wheras many cars of the same period (70's) at least looked OK with an aftermarket fit the P6 does not and tends to stand out like the proverbial dogs bollocks.

Were I to redo mine I would as I say make a custom molding facia shape that blended in to the existing door style and was skinned with the same material :D However being the lazy so and so that I am with mine I just did a hidden installation that was much easier and did not detract from the standard look (sounds good though).

hi thanks dave that what i was thinking about 10inch would do the job i had to replace the rear door mech on my seat leon last weeks so i order a use panal and it came with a speak which i think i will stick that in the front or the back so that will make the sounder better 2 in the front doors 1 under the radio and the rear i think i will have a better system in my rover then the leon lol

This is the kind of thing I had in mind for my door cards...

By the way thanks to the owner of this glorious S1 P6B for the use of this picture...

Very easy really, you just have to take your time and be careful.
Obviously you will need to remove the door card.
But 1st, position the cover grilles, making sure they didnt foul the winder handles, and marked round it,then centered the speaker in that circle and marked the screw holes in the right place so the grille would be the right way up for the logo.
Make sure you have the hole you are going to cut out smaller that the cover grille.
I marked the inner circle to cut out,and carefully with a very sharp stanley or scalpel, cut the vynil and padding to reveal the card, then slowly with a junior hacksaw blade, cut the card in a circle.
you could get hold of an old door card from a scrappie,"any type" and have a practise run!
Good luck,it will make a lot of difference to the sound quality!
Especially with a pair of matching period rear shelf mounted wedge type speakers as well!

And it might seem obvious but do not forget that the window winder turns and to allow for the the window winder not touching the speaker surround when you turn the window winder to open the window. I have seen this mistake made! Good luck.

Cheers

Tony

To be honest I wouldn't dare to cut the door panels off. It is not only the window winder, but also that after more than 30 years some components could be a bit "overripe" and prone to break very easily.

In order to improve the ICE of my recently bought P6 2200 I am going to install a couple of cased speakers on the rear tray along with an MP3 amplifier:

http://www.virtualvillage.es/mini-ampli ... 4-032.html

and either a new MP3 or my current daily-used Creative MP4. I will decide what to do in the future.

I already have the speakers. They are a gift from the shop which is going to make the installation. As the owner (good friend of mine) told me some days ago, they were the first goods he sold the first day he got into the business, some 30 years ago. He was able to find them again, got them back and now they will come to my car. I promise some pics when installation is finished. I have to wait for the amplifier to come here, luckily by early 2010.
