speakers

Greetings Rover Diaspora; I'd like to install a pair of modern speakers in an inconspicuous as possible location in my (nada) 3500s. (I recently purchased a converted Radiomobile unit from one of our forum regulars) Anyone have any ideas on stealth speaker (standard 6" size) installation? The factory installation jammed in the dash, fighting for space with the power window wiring, just doesn't cut it. thnx, Steve

Really up to you where you put them, i considered putting them in the front doors however i didnt want to damage my door cards as they where in good nick, so i went for the rear parcell shelf, let me tell you its a pain in the backside, but im quiet happy with the end result, firstly mark out the speakers in the middle of each of the back seats, then pull em out, only held in by a few screws, i then took out the cover on the rear shelf, i cut that last, then pieced the centre of the outline of the speaker, there are pre cut sections in which the speaker can sit, then i cut out with tin snips, took a while, hard to use power tools as the petrol tank is right below.

Wired it all up put it all back together and now i have 2 180 watt speakers and a new head unit

My approach was to bolt box speakers under the front passengers and drivers seats (forward facing) and to complement these with dash mounted tweeters and left and right center mid range speakers in the pocket above the radio.

Ive mounted a pair of period shelf mount speakers in the back.

I did have speakers in the door cards, but found a nice set of uncut cards, and just use the rear speakers now,as it does the job for me!

I am not a DJ so I don't need perfect stereo etc. I too have a period radio fitted and have one speaker on the grille beneath the radio and one beneath the rear parcel shelf where the original one was. Sound is good enough for me .

When i purchased my Rover, it came with a period, AM only radio, my girlfriend at the time didnt like AM, me personally i dont mind, its all talk back generally, and on long drives, it didnt go down to well, plus, if there was music couldnt get it loud or clear enough to hear over the high hum of the v8.

When i put in the cd player and new speakers, it went over quiet well, no more complaning on those long drives, just the occasional disagreement over what cd to listen to insdead :)

Hi Steve,

I removed the original radio and speaker from my Rover last year but do miss not having one for the longer journeys, but I don't want to cut up the door cards and even though I have a cutout under the rear shelf I can't be bothered routing the wires to the back. Like Mick I would like to fit a speaker behind the original grill under the dash but obviously I don't want mono sound so I found an American manufacturer who make all sorts of car audio equipment and one of the problems they address is having only one speaker location but the modern desire for stereo sound so they supply a dual voice coil speaker that has two inputs and provides stereo sound, they may have one that would fit behind the grill on yours:D

I found a stockist here in the UK that sell the one i want for £55 but follow this link to the US site and it will tell you about the range.

I'm not looking for a booming sound system but I think this would give me decent sound when I plug my ipod in.

Hope the helps :D

hi mikep,
me and someone else have looked into this and the room at the front is very very limited and they do not do a speaker small enough for the front with us having electric windows and air - con.

Hi Ian,

That's a shame as I think that type of speaker would be a good solution and keep the interior looking original.

My solution for front mounts works very well in the space available and is undetectable unless you are looking.

Both left and right speakers inserted at the very back of the pocket on a panel, they only consume about 2 inches of depth so you are still left with a very usable pocket, in normal seated position you cannot see them at all.

speakers of this size are available upto about 20 Watts RMS.

what about fitting a sub under the seats and adding a couple of very small speakers for directional sound on top of the dash somehow?

 oh so you have seen my car!!

That was my solution, though I physically bolted the box speakers to the seat mechanism under each seat so that as the seats move fore and aft the speakers move to, it also has the added advantage of the bass response being more directly felt as you can imagine. the front being complemented with tweeters at extreme ends of the dash under the dash top directly facing the car occupants.
Rears are some high quality Japanese Kenwood units which are sculptured with curve's and are unobtrusive.
Total holes made in car?? none, except for two holes drilled in to the seat base on each chair. My brief for the job was leave the car in a state after removal that left no impact and also have the most unobtrusive yet effective sound system possible with out panel customization. I was able to achieve good sound (and loud to) I would rate it for sound quality a 5 to 6 out of 10 when compared to a good custom setup and a good 8 compared to a good late model Japanese car.

thank you all for your ideas, advise and pictures... haven't done anything with it yet, but I will very soon.... gotta finish the indoor projects before spring (which feels like it might be coming soon)....
