Special engine??

Ice just given my old girl a full service and despite what the Manuel says I've got a sump plug on either side of sump and no oil cooler?? It's a 1973 2000 TC. OXC 873M if anyone can shed some light on this?

Yes, that is totally normal! Oil Coolers disappeared from the 2000TC in the 60's I think, and the sump does indeed have two sump plugs - use whichever one is most convenient to you ;-)

Cheers,
Bri.

I think the oil cooler becamed optional on UK market models later on. It remained standard on most export TCs. Just cost cutting I guess but the twin sump plugs thing is perfectly normal, not really sure why though. Maybe Rover knew that at least one of them would be rounded off by a previous owner!

IIRC correctly without looking at the books, the oil cooler was only 'standard' on the first year of Home Market 2000TC's, along with the radiator with built in overflow tank.

Abolished as standard at the end of 1967. Probably axed for cost reasons along with the brass badges etc. etc. as British Leyland penny pinching took effect.

The oil cooler is a bit of a boon for a TC owner, certainly - Angie's car just refuses to get over-hot, even in the most warm of weather.

Was it that early? My red TC was one of the first '68 season cars built and it has the oil cooler in the bottom of the rad and the overflow tank on the side. It is an export model though. 416 chassis number. But it never gets hot or loses so much as a drop of coolant. (or oil for that matter)

That's ok then... Thought some idiot had done away with it cause it stopped working or something... I've got the expasion on the rad but no oil cooler..

Cheers for the help guys

I'm thinking about UK models. A quick look at the JT book suggests the oil cooler disappeared from the TC's at the start of the 1969 model year.

I'm pretty sure the oil cooler continued for hot climate export cars at least until the start of S2.

Chris

In some cases it may well have continued until the end of production.

Yep, I scrapped an accident damaged 2200TC a few years back with one. That was a '74 and I've seen plenty of '71-'73s with them.

Yes. We're talking 4 cylinders here Graeme. (Unfamiliar territory for you I realise. ) and it's an engine oil cooler, not a trans cooler.

thats what I thought an engine oil cooler, shame they didnt do that for the 8 as well.
