speed awareness course

hi all I have been naughty and been caught speeding. Does anyone know what the criteria is for the speed awareness course and what influence it has on the insurance and for how long u have to declare it?
many thanks

Bad luck. I know nothing about speed awareness courses but my daughter and son-in-law are police officers so if you have any specific questions I can ask them.

AFAIK you can do the course for a first offence, and as it's not a conviction then once you've done the course there's no need to tell your ins co, but I suggest you find someone a little better qualified than me as that may have changed.......

I think each police force has its own criteria. Round here you are offered the course if you haven't done one in the previous three years and are only slightly over the limit eg up to 86 mph in a 70 limit you are offered the course, 87 to 95 you get a fixed penalty and 96 or over it is a court appearance.

I was wondering at what point if any I have to inform my insurance company. I am assuming I haven't got to do anything as of yet as I don't know what I will get ie the course or fine and points etc. I was doing 38 in a 30 and didn't see the police camera van until it was too late as there were lorries blocking it from view. I don't have any excuse really I was doing it so I have to admit to it and take what ever im given on the chin as it were. Just don't want to make it any worse by doing something I don't have to or not doing something im supposed to.

If I were in your situation I would take the course, the cost is about the same as the fine and you don't need to tell your insurers.

Dave I read on the p6 newsletter I was e-mailed yesterday about the new laws in your neck of the woods,,,,, they are going to prosecute for 1mph over the limit!!

I'd be very surprised if that's the case. The ACPO guidelines are 10% + 2mph.

Excuse my normal scepticism in these matters. I always take the 'my friend's brother got done for 1mph over' stories with a very generous pinch of salt.

well it was in the p6 newsletter I was e-mailed as a warning rather than a excuse of getting caught

Many newsletters are guilty of printing hearsay & rumour.
"It's in The Sun so it must be true."

Can you really see a +1mph campaign by the police? They're complaining about cuts in budget as it is.

ACPO guidelines don't apply in Scotland. As well as having our own police force here we also have our own very distinct legal system. I do wish people would stop presuming that anything applicable to England is applicable to the whole of the UK.

It's lazy journalism and I've pointed that out to the authors of the piece.

BTW if the tolerance is 1mph over I'll just make sure i drive at 1mph under and give myself twice the margin of error :D

Coop. I misunderstood your initial post, and thought you already had the notice and were asking about the course itself.

Assuming this was in Kent, you should be offered the course if you do not already have points and were not exceeding 40mph. If it was a police camera they will take no action up to 37mph but if it was the 'safety partnership' they set the threshold 1-2 mph lower. Cost is £80-100.

hi im hopping I get the speed awareness course but it seems to be a little hit and miss as to who gets it regardless of speed and amount of times caught. I was a little concerned about my insurance cover as when I got the policy they specifically asked me if I had been on a speed awareness course (at the time I hadn't) however it does say on my policy that if anything changes I have to notify them immediately.

I am assuming that I haven't been charged yet with the offence as all I have done is fill in the yes it was me driving form. Therefor haven't been charged with anything and don't have to declare it yet.

if this is wrong pls let me know as I don't want to give them any excuse to cancel my policy

many thanks

I'd say that as you were asked if you've been on a course when you took out the policy, and if anything changes they must be notified, then if you go on the course you'll have to tell them, but at this point in time, you've not been on the course, or got points if you're not eligible for the course, so there's been no change. Notify them, when there is. ie, when you've got the points following conviction, or been on the course.

If it's any consolation, my daughter said that Kent are particularly keen on the course (probably because it's the cheapest option), so if you are sure about your speed you should be alright.

Maybe not & maybe so. But l'd still seriously doubt the validity of a 1mph speeding purge.
