OK. It took me 2 hours to reconnect this and I've a sore back and am missing some skin on my hand. Am I missing something or is there a secret method of reuniting the two?

Worse than this swapping the angle drive didn't even fix the ticking........

I'm not aware of any secret method of reconnecting the speedo extension so well done on doing it in 2 hours :D

I've found it's very hit & miss, sometimes they go back on very easily and sometimes they take forever

If I was using my brain instead of swearing I could used my cheapie USB boroscope and laptop. I could have put it between the parcel shelf and the speedo, it has its own little light. The picture quality isn't great, but it is good enough.

So clearly no secret sauce and Zen like patience is the answer. Need to work on that one.

The problem is there really isn't any "feel" as such.

I also find it "hit and miss". I only did it a few times, and i remember very well that once or twice i got it right first time. But i could not remember where exacly and how i placed my hands to succeed. As far as i remember, it was was easy enough to make the cable end meet the angle drive, but i could not find easily the correct angle of the extension to start on the thread. Things got worse when the last time i put some extra insulation in there. The boroscope sounds an interesting idea to try.

I just did one last weekend. Had a hell of a time initially with my head under the dash trying to see what was happening and getting nowhere. In the end I got myself nice and comfy in the drivers seat, shut my eyes and went by feel. Took about 15 minutes in the end.

2 hours??? OMG I must live a charmed life, took mine off and relubricated the right angle drive and refitted from whoa to go about 25 minutes. the actual refitment time of the drive to the back of the speedo about 20 seconds  and all from the comfort of the front seat.

It's only a problem with the ribbon speedo, not the series 2 round clock dash.
thank god for that I was beginning to panic because I have to replace my speedo cable at some point

It's the position of your tongue that's the key. If you don't have it poking out of the corner of your mouth just right you'll be upside down under the dash for hours.
