Squeal on cornering (not wheel spin.....)

Hi all,

Just noticed over the last couple of days that I have a bit of a "squeal" on cornering. It appears that it may be the gear box (BW65) as there is some minor slipping as well. The fluid levels all appeared OK on last check so am wondering what this may be.

Any suggestions???

If it is gearbox then the normal cause of slip when cornering is low fluid level. The noise is more difficult to diagnose but could be the pump sucking air through the filter.

Hi Harvey,

PAE has today developed a squeal and slip from first to 2nd. Is this likely to be similar - i.e. air in the system. I havent checked the fluid yet as i'm at work at the moment but it was ok the weekend before last.

I'm pretty worried by it's behaviour, and think it's maybe about to give up the ghost... but in Dthe drive seems fine.

Well I'd check and set the fluid level before I did anything else anyway. If it's slip on the 1-2 shift, then try a SECOND gear start ("2" or "D2") and see what happens then. If it slips on 1-2 but not pulling away it could possibly be fluid level related, if it does it in both instances it could be front band adjustment, or a fault with its servo or the band itself.

If i try a '2' start it acts like it might be slamming into 1st. I'll check the fluid level when i leave here tonight. It's entirely possible that the long standing slow leak has now become a faster leak i guess...

Thanks,

Rich

I thought it shouldnt from what you've said previously about 2 for hill starts, and the hill start feature has worked for me before.

I'll check the fluid and if it is right i'll try and get a little video so you can see what i mean - much better than trying to describe in words!

Well looks like level has dropped severely so have topped up and will see if it holds it. Clive annable suggested the leak was from the front seal when he saw it at stoneleigh. If its that I'm guessing its likely to be a gearbox out job?

It is.

If you can remove/refit the box yourself it's a cheap job, not quite so cheap if you pay someone else to do it for you. The seal is less than a tenner delivered.

I'll always have a go if it's not too far beyond my capabilities. I guess the question is whether this is something i can attempt on the driveway with the car on stands? Is there anything risky(to my well being) or anything a hamfisted amateur like me could break?

I guess if i get the box off and it looks worse than i was expecting, a second hand unit is always an option too...

I can't think of much that could mean you need another box if the problem you're trying to sort out in the first place is just a front pump seal leaking. I've done them on ramps and stands in the road. (Although I wouldn't advise that course of action nowadays). Driveway. You don't know you're born mate!
The biggest risk is damaging the new seal when refitting the box. The biggest unknown is whether the downpipe studs snap. As for whether you're capable of doing it youself, only you can answer that, but all I would say is that a lot of the people around who would take it on and charge you for doing it will have less of an idea if what they're doing than you do. And that includes so called "specialists".

hmmm. Maybe i shouldnt publish all my mistakes online :D

I'll look forward to that, should make interesting reading...

Personally, before you commit yourself to any course of action I'd powerwash the underside of the engine/gearbox as best you can and then make a definitive diagnosis as to where the leak is coming from.

Well topped it up this morning and we're running OK again, so this is looking like a worsening of the previous leak. I'll get the bottom jetwashed over the weekend and report back!

Thanks for all your sage advice as always Harvey!

Hi All,

Thanks for a quick fire and vigorous thread.

I double checked the levels and found the box to be low. Refilled with a slug of Castrol ATQF and all apperars to be OK. The box is back to it's usual self with strong take off and other than a slap in the back on 1st to 2nd and the occasional clunk on 2nd to 1st seems fine.

The question is: where does the fluid go if there is no sign of leakage?

Gung Ho!!
