Stalling V8!

Needless to say, I delighted with my '75 P6B Auto. Went on a long journey of about 200 miles at the weekend. Just when I thought how well it was running (about 50mph) , all of a sudden the engine died, rev counter fell to zero and all dash lights came up. There was no jerking associated with this and no warning at all. I pulled over, it started again instantly and carried on as though nothing had happened. About 100 miles later it repeated this performance, but again re-started fine. Any thoughts much appreciated.
Cheers, Mike

I had mysterious cutting out once but it was more like 100m between stops. Mine only worked OK on the reserve fuel supply only which is how I got home. Seems there is a part on the fuel pick up which can move and block the main pick up tube -so I was told . I took the pump off and blew back down the fuel line with compressed air. Hasn't done it since (touch wood). It was that or remove the tank

Dave,
did you have any coughing, spluttering prior to stopping or did it just stop dead?
I had problems with fuel pick up on a previously owned 3500 that could be cured by pulling the reserve tap!
Mike's symptoms sound like electrical failure and a very sudden stoppage of life - Like battery / earth connection!
I suspect electrical rather than fuel from the symptoms so far!
Please advise on further developments.
Regards, John.

I dont know if it will help I had what sounds like the same prob with my 3500 it turned out to be a loose wire on what appeared to be a cut out switch that had been fited years before this had been fitted to the earth of the coil and as it earthed it cut out ( I DIDNT KNOW IT HAD A CUT OUT UNTILL IT STARTED CUTTING OUT) :)

many thanks for all your thoughts, I agree that it's probably electrical, I going to get the condensor changed and see if it improves matters.

I did wonder if Rover 1066's problems were electrical.
With an auto , surely the engine can die while the car is still rolling along? With a manual , the stopped engine brings the car to a standstill quicker
My symptoms if I remember were that the car went slower and slower the more I put my foot on the accelerator. Pull out the reserve knob , crank it over and it would be OK. It's never done it again. I think Paul Atkinson told me about the bit that blocks the inlet
1066's problems could be coil, condenser, fuel pump etc . Really need to do some tests when it conks out to see what is missing -fuel or spark
