Starter motor woes

Well, I was just about to have a bit of fun and start messing around with the EFI and Sparky decides he is hungry, and eats his own starter motor

The motor just spins when trying to start him, so I whipped it out and this is what I found

Holding my mobile phone in the holes, I managed to get some pictures of the other bits

That look like a spring right at the back

What a palava

Didn't you have some ring gear/starter issues in the not too distant past ? or am i imagining i read that ?

Nope, you did not imagine it. I actually tried to fix it then, but my health at the time meant paying out for someone to fix it. Four slipped discs stopped me from climbing under it to play.

It was actually Oct 2012, so I will be on the phone to him tomorrow to see what can be done.

It may just be that these high torque starter motors are crap :)

Richard

Bad luck :(

No use at all, but I've had two secondhand starters do the same on my '70 Volkswagen in the last 7 years.

Hi Richard,

I have heard that same sentiment from people working in the motor industry too. The factory fitted P6B starter motors by all accounts are extremely good, and if possible it is always better to try and obtain one of these.

When wrestling the small one out yesterday, it did occur to me that it was used because there simply isn't room for the standard one, with those headers.

I might try to borrow one to see how well or even 'if' it fits.

Richard

Why is nothing ever easy

Anyhoo, looks like the company who rebuilt it are going to have it back and fix it, so crossed fingers here :)

There are two types of motor, one of which is a lot smaller than the other.

You mean there were two types of motor fitted at the factory during production? Can either be fitted instead of the other (assuming there's sufficient clearance)?

Two types from the factory, both are interchangeable. Early ones are larger than later ones.

Hi Ant,

In the case of the cross bolted engines, which the 4.0 and 4.6 are, only the latter type will fit.

To move the car by cranking by hand if the engine or something else is in a failed position. Like I said a guess

The example used (IIRC) was that if you're traversing a river (as you do...) and you soak all the engine electrics so it all comes to a halt midway, you select first gear and Low Range, and then turn the starting handle to crank yourself back to dry land, so I'd say you were pretty much right on the money.
