starter wont stop starting???

Hey guys.

Got Sleipnir/PAE back yesterday. Second time i've gone to start it today:

I turned the key, it started but the starter carried on going. I removed the key. The starter kept on turning, very dark outside so i ended up removing the battery earth lead.

Any ideas what this is likely to be, especially given that the gearbox has been out and in again? (And dont ask about that...)

Thanks

Rich.

Hi Rich,

I just want to clarify, when you started the engine, the starter did not disengage from the engine? Then when you turned the engine off and removed the key prior to disconnecting the battery, the starter was still cranking the engine over?

 How odd..

Failing to disengage I can understand but cranking over with the key out is really bizzare. Has the wiring been tampered with just recently Rich? Sounds like a direct connection between the battery,..ie 12 Volts and the solenoid so that it has power all the time... :?

that's what i thought. i havent changed anything so guessing it's been disturbed by the inhibitor switch wiring somehow or the autobox being out and back in again...

Rich.

Hi if this auto and the box has been out, the loom that goes to the inhibiter switch is not
pinched between the engine and bellhousing or otherwise damaged is it? If not then it could
be starter contacts in ignition switch or starter relay contacts still stuck together. Does it stop
turning over if you take the signal wire off the starter? If yes then connect this wire to a bulb
and then check switch and relay till the bulb goes out.

ha - but i was guessing, whereas you've intimated that there is a possibility that the fault could be caused this way (by prior knowledge rather than guesswork?)...

Rich.

With the key out the inhibitor wires aren't powered up, so even if they were shorted together it wouldn't cause the problem, so it's either the ignition switch itself, (but that would stop cranking if you took the car out of P or N) or the 6RA relay, which if internally shorted would run the starter constantly regardless of gearlever position. It could be the starter itself, but I think that's less likely.

Refit battery, so engine cranks with key out, move gearlever out of P & N, if it stops its the ignition switch, if it doesn't go to the 6RA and remove the wire from that to the starter and that should stop it. I can't be certain but I think it's the "C1" terminal.

DO THE ABOVE WITH THE IGNITION DISCONNECTED SO IT DOESN'T START. (Just in case)

Thanks harvey - just one silly question - where can i find the 6RA - does it look like a modern relay, and can it be replaced with a modern equivalent?

CHeers,

Rich.

Up on the driver's side inner wing near the brake fluid reservoir IIRC.

Still available and if you have need I can put you on to a good supplier who I'm sure would have one.

Cool :) wonder if he's touched the slightly duff looking alternator wiring at all... that would go through there too i guess?

Nothing to do with the alternator wiring at all AFAIK, all it does is act as a relay to prevent the full load going through the ignition switch.

Well that's tomorrow morning's mission sorted :)

Dont know what we'd do without you harvey :)

Hi Rich,

Just be careful when you buy the new 6RA that you come away with the correct one. There are many different 6RA relays with the same number of terminals but the internal connections and whether the switches are normally open or normally closed are all different.

You'll need the code off the original one to compare with the new one so that you can be sure that you buy the correct one.

Ron.
