starting problems

Hi all, need your thoughts please.been having trouble starting the car of late, the only way it will start is by turning the dizzy so the timing is out and then it will fire up.once going and warmed up I'll put the dizzy back and it is running sweet but come to start it the next day and it will not catch.Gone to start it tonight at work and it won't catch no matter what.Been reading other comments about electric ignition,is it easy to install and any recommendations.cheers.

by the way I've got a '71 2000SC

Had something vaguely similar on muh V8-S.
Couldnt get the bugger to start. So I started undoing all the PO's botches. One of which was his lousy attempt at a crimped conection the lead that plugs on the coil and runs into the dizzy case.
Turns out I wasnt getting a very good contact due to crap electrical connection.
Perhapse you are disturbing an electrical connection?

Hmm.. what else? Are you sure your choke mechanism is opperating correctly? I believe altering the timming can have the effect of making the mix at point x in the combustion cycle seem richer which is what you need first thing in the morning.

Get the car running and warm then switch off. Can you restart?

Hi Borat
Had excactly the same problem with my v8 once last summer.I checked all connections, tried again, no joy!!
re-adjusted and cleaned the points, and bingo!! sorted!! that explained its poor performance and regular difficulty starting.
do the '5 Ps' check!! petrol, power, pressure, plugs, points,
as it does start and run,it can only really be a dodgy adjustment or a faulty connector.
My personal opinion of electronic ignition is,dont bother!!
My neighbours v8 kit car had it, always was a bit lumpy, then it went, BANG!! apparently, the module would of cost £75+ to replace, we fitted a std points dizzy, its Brill!!
no more lumpyness, just smooth, great power!! if it goes wrong he will only have to replace the, rotor, points, or condensor, and!!very cheaply!!! and he keeps spares in the boot :p :D

Hi guys, been on the motor most of the day,all plugs and leads sparking, points seemed ok so thought it might be the condenser so got a new one but no change.Thought it might be fuel so had the carb off and stripped it down, all ok.Was just about to get me boots on and kick it when i changed the lead from the coil to the dizzy and hey presto, first turn and it fires up.unfortunately have only just read JCs comment. Will hold on any thoughts about the electric ignition and see how it goes.cheers all. :D :D

Ah well. At least you have done some preventative maintainence that other wise might not have been done. So it turned out well for you in the end. :)

So the cure didn't match the symptoms .
Points are OK if properly maintained and you can always carry spares so a breakdown doesn't leave you stranded
