Steering box compatibility

Hi all,
I've just bought a steering box for my 72 2000SC online and the one I have received is for a 3500. Apart from the visual differences in case shape etc could anybody tell me if this will do the job (fit and function) on my 2000 please,
many thanks,
Jon.

The box itself should fit and work without problems, but there may be the possibility that if you have the wiper motor on the drivers side, and you are trying to fit the later style box, then the wiper motor bracket you have may not fit.

I have a nagging feeling that 2000 boxes are slightly higher ratio than 3500 manual ones. I might have a trawl of the manuals later to verify.

Possibly, to account for the wider tyres. Won't stop it fitting and working even if it turns out to be the case.

I've looked in the books, and they are slightly different ratios at straight ahead, but the main difference is the later boxes are variable ratio.

They do fit and work just fine, in fact I think they might even make the steering a wee bit lighter. As mentioned though, you will have to modify the brackets where the wiper motor goes.

Thanks for your replies, I'll look into the wiper bracket situation when I'm next to the car and it's light. I intend to reshim the original 2000 one but as the car is an everyday car time off the road is time lost so if I can get the one I've bought to fit then that's great news. Eventually I'll recon the 2000 box and refit it. I've never reshimmed a steering box before but everything has a first time :D
Any more info is greatly appreciated, valuable experiences of others is always a great help when tackling something for the first time.
Thanks again,
Jon.

From memory one type of box has a stud at the front and not the bolt as you can't drop the bolt in due to the longer nose above it.
Someone will remember what I mean and explain, it's a vague recollection  Not rocket science to sort though

hi grimV8,
what you are refering to is manual steering and PAS cars. the stud is for the PAS cars and bolt for manual.

No, know what you mean but there are two different noses on the non PAS boxes. I've had it when customers have been supplied the wrong parts but it still fitted with the bolt changed to a stud :)
