steering pump????

Hi, with claening the garage i found on hte floor a small piece it is 3mm round and 1/4 inch lg.
I don't know exactly what it is and if it is from my rover but i have looked at the site roverclassics.uk and see a part at the steering pump with number 536376 maybe this is the part and have i forgotten to build in.
I can't see in the drawing what this part 536376 is doing it lookslike my steering pump works fine.
Any ideas??

That piece i see at site roverclassics.uk with partn 536376 is in the rover repair manual called 'cam lock peg' but i think i don't disassembled the cam.
Do sombody know the dimensions from cam lock peg? It is in the repair operation manual nr12 in the drawing.

It looks like a small pin on the drawing. Does that part hold the two pump housings in line before the bolts are in place?

There are two other dowels that line the two halves of the pump up, that pin is there to locate something else in position, but without having a pump in front of me I can't think what offhand.....

PS. It may be to stop the outer track of the pump spinning.

In the book says its locked the cam , but my English is not so good but i think the outside of the pump, but when i don't know the dimensions of the pin i don't start to open the pump again it's just filled with new oil , but when sombody is sure it is 3mm round en 1/4inch long than i started open the pump.

I have just stripped and rebuilt my power steering pump today and I know what this piece is. The picture in the manual is a bit misleading. When you take the pump apart, there are six small cylinders sitting in a star shaped rotor (item 20 in the Haynes manual.....I don't have my Rover service manual to hand!). All of these sit in a circular off centre sleeve, which is what I think is the cam. It is shown as one piece all assembled in the manual. The cam lock peg sits in a small hole in the bottom of the pump housing to stop the outer circilar sleeve (the cam) from spinning with the centre part of the pump ie. the six small cylinders and star shaped rotor . If it was to all spin together, then there would be no pumping action. If you have left the pin out and the pump is working then the outer sleeve is not spinning. It is actually held in place by the O ring seal, as when it is fitted into the pump, the chamfer around its outer edger makes the groove for the seal to sit in.

If you have ever taken one of these apart, hopefully this message will make some sense!

Hi , today open the steering pump to be sure if the small piece isn't forget.
I split the pump and see nothing, try carefully disassemble the outer circilar sleeve and.. yes the small piece was not mounted, it is positioned axial in the surface, i think the hole is drilled thrue because i had not dissambled the outer sleeve and it is maybe coming out with the disassy a couple of months back.
Today i have not disassembly the bearring piece and the pin is just 1or2 mm above the surface.
Now i am happy i found that small piece on the garagefloor and i put it back in the right place.

that sounds great Hans! You would have been always worrying about that! And very good observation both to spot the piece and to recognise where it had come from!
