STIFFENING SUSPENSION - RUBBER SPIRAL INSERT THINGS!!!!!!!!

Hi all.

Another thing I want to do, now I have fitted the towbar permanently,is fit some of those rubber spiral spring insert stiffener things!!
Dunno what they are really called or where to get them, but I know I used a pair in my old 2000tc back in 1978.
They helped to raise the back quite a bit to counteract the load in the boot or from a caravan.
I saw a pair on ebay not long ago but forgot to bid on them!!
I always carry a spare battery, water, fuel, oil, small trolleyjack and toolkit.
Maybe the rear springs are a bit tired, coz it dont half look lower than it should! :(
Where can I get beefier springs,my dampers have 3 settings soft, med, hard.
Some P6's ive seen at shows really seem to ride high at the rear!! How?? why??
Anybody got any thoughts ??? ???
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave

You should be able to pick a pair of the spring spacers up at most Auto spares shop, and definately at any caravan accessory shop. I fitted a set to my neighbours car last year and I think they were about £15 per set. A right bugger to fit, even after an hour in hot water. As for the difference in height at the back I'm not to sure, although I supose a lot of it will be done to the condition of the rear suspension.

Cheers

I'm sure I remember seeing several P6's with a raised ride height at the rear, and being told that the cars had been fitted with a set of front springs on the back. Can't say I've ever done it, (or would even consider it) but researching the spring rates and lengths might give a clue whether it was feasable, and if so whether it would give the result you're looking for. :p

Ian at Roverclassics could get his spring maker to make you some springs to your spec.

Worth a check and it will look standard.

Hi Dave

If you're prepared to wait I'm pretty sure my Blue car has them at the back. Only problem is it's up at Leighton Buzzard and I'm not in control of when the old rear springs are coming out - could be into January.

As far as ride height is concerned, yes they do sag with age and yes, last time I saw yours at Crich it does look pretty low at the back - but then I thought you had rather a lot of spares with you....

You can check your ride height by reference to the workshop manual - it gives all the factory tolerences. Let us know if you need them on here.

Solutions to a sagged rear and or trailering? Well, simplest step is replacement standard springs - Ian at Rover-Classics should be able to help there, he will have seen how saggy they were before he took them out. He could also help with a set of the (ex Ray Weekly) progressive rear springs. Just the thing for occasional trailering - standard rate to start with stiffening to much stiffer with a big load on and sorts the ride height as well. If you're going to do a lot of heavy trailer work you might want to go for fully uprated springs. I think the best contact for them is Alan at Leighton Buzzard and explain what you want - he has done me a set of +45%'s for the back of the Blue car but can make up whatever seems right from your description of your use intention.

Hi Chris

Yep youre right I did have a bootfull of spares at Crich.
The basic ride is ok,but a little soft in the cornering dept, not that I throw it about.
It was too low when I towed the TR6 to/from the paint shop with the speclift trailer, and a bit soft!!
I do have a set of fronts as harvey suggested I could try.
I can wait till your blue car gives up its rears.Give me a call when ready.
I dont intend doing much trailerwork, its nice to have it there for as and when its needed!! Might find another P6 to break!! I know of 4 but havent got time or space at the moment!
