Straight tailpipe?

Guten Abend

Are there tailpipes available that have no muffler?
Maybe even made of stainless steel?

"Googling" that brings some difficulties and most results seem to be for other cars or home made... .

DANKE!

Hi Stefan,

You can replace the muffler, not to be confused with the resonator, with a straight piece of pipe. You could also replace the resonator with a straight piece of pipe, but be aware that you could make your exhaust system very drummy by doing so. By that I mean, inside the car at certain speeds, you'll hear and almost feel a drone, which is not nice at all.

Ron.

Hey Ron,

thank you for responding!
Right, I do hope that the one in the tailpipe IS the muffler? :?

We were wondering about what manipulation does affect the sound in what way.
Emptying the muffler (?!?) would make the car sound hollow and drummy, is what we thought, but replacing it with a straight pipe should give that extra bit of - well, SOUND, right?
Besides, as the bit of tailpipe sticking out under the bumper is a bit short and quite rusty, we wanted it replaced anyway... .

Is there, like, a race or track tailpipe to be bought?

I just cut mine off. Straight pipe instead of the rear silencer, and it's also twinned. There are some pictures somewhere on here. It sounds loovveelllyyyy :)

 8) :!:
THAT'S what we're after :!:

Well, I do hope to find a "plug-and-play" pipe for the sheer elegance of it.
Also, I like the idea of having the stock part at home and being able to switch back if I want - or have! - to. So I might ask a friend to build me a straight stainless pipe if I can not buy one.

But ultimately I will try the cutting off-bit just to have a go :!:

Does the twinning affect the sound? Of course it does, what a stupid question, but how?

sound wise, it's a lot deeper, the second pipe is just added on so I can have 2 there really, it is connected but at almost right angles to the normal flow. It adds a lot of bass into the idle as it resonates along that second pipe. When it's idly idling very slowly it almost breathes in and out of the second pipe. Not ideal, but it looks cool and sounds great. Beamish 2012 it made some people visibly jump when I started it.

I'll see if I can take a video of it, the last one I tried the camera was hopeless and it sounded like a tractor...

It sounds even better when the right foot is down. As it's part of the reason I bought the car ( in fact the V8 was the reason I bought it) then it might as well make a slightly hooligan-y noise.

"Laughing out loud", I think, is what young people say and write after reading your post :)

Reminds me of the reason what Heike wanted in the first place: a V8 car
Who'd have thought that it would be one of the nicest of its sort :!:

Reading your reply made me wonder:
Does your car have two cut-outs (?) in its body under the bumper, so that you routed the second pipe across the bottom to the other side under the battery?

It does, yes, so the second pipe is tucked up nicely similar to the 'original' side. I did get some cheap chrome plated table legs to cover the pipes with, but they have gone rusty so fast it's funny. The pic is (frigging enormous! Sorry!!) of the right hand side tailpipe.

You can get polished stainless or alumimium tubing in many sizes on ebay for little £s
Jim

That's what I did recently, replaced the rear silencer (which had a hole in anyway) with a piece of 76mm stainless with a reducer to fit onto the original pipe, looks & sounds lovely. Just like a yank V8. I got the pipe off ebay & the reducer, plus a couple of clamps, didn't cost very much & well worth it if you like a v8 to sound as it should!

Just shooting off on a tangent for a moment, Rob, your exhaust pipe colour looks black and rather sooty, suggesting that your engine is running too rich. Which needles are you running?

Ron.

" frigging enormous! "

WHOAH - glad you noticed

Thank you guys :!:

I´ll have a chinwag with a mate of mine who makes a living from building motorbike exhaust systems for exotic and classic bikes.
He swore never again do another car exhaust - he made one for a souped up VW T4 once, that did it - but one tailpipe should not be a problem for him, especially as he can get any sort of material... .

Come to think of it:
Do you think it would be worth asking around for owners who would want one :? ?
I think (from him making Heinkel Tourist inlet pipes for me from stainless steel for thermal insultion from the cylinder) that I could talk him into doing a mini series.
Price for the Heinkel piece was calculated VERY low, in relation the most expensive part of the deal for you "oversea" guys in the UK, US or Newzealand would be the shipping... .

Schönen Abend noch !

stefan

Jim that's a better idea :)

Ron yes, it's far too rich at the moment. I've not got round to messing with the mixture after changing the distributor. It works, and goes well, still managing around 20mpg, but hardly needs the choke. I just need a spare hour or so - hard to find when moving house!
