Hi Pilkie/Harvey

I think that you will have the answer to the final part of my question and I am hoping that Harvey will read it and send some helpful advice as well.

I have a Rover 3500 Auto J reg 1970 I purchased the car off a gentleman after his father had passed away. Before his father passed away he had the Auto gearbox fully reconditioned and since then the car has covered about 1000 miles (One Thousand) that was 25 years ago and since then it has been in a dry garage until I purchased it. I have nearly fully restored it over the last 3 years including a full respray. Changed all the oil and filter in the Auto gearbox but have not been able to drive it yet only in and out of the garage. It has now developed a whine a bit like radio suppression that gets louder the more you rev the engine. I have had some difficulty getting drive and late getting drive in reverse. Could this be the pump inside the gearbox failing. or will I have to drive it to find out what will happen ????.

Second part of the Question if I need someone to remove recondition the Gearbox or fit a new pump if it is that Pilkie can you recommend anybody or would you do it.
I live in Gloucestershire.

kind Regards

Gary

I had the same problem on start up - the noise you describe, it went away gradually as the car warmed up.
Following advice here I removed and cleaned the filter in the trans oil pan, the noise has gone completely.
