Strip speedo illumination

My speedo does not light up much, how bright should they be ? Tried to remove it to check bulbs but its not budging. I removed the clock and rev pod, unclipped the warning light cover, removed the 2 securing screws and it still won't move. What's next ? How many bulbs are in their ? Cheers Mick

Series 1 dash lights weren't terribly bright to start with, but in any case you should be able to read the speedo and the gauges in the dark without any difficulty. Mind you, the brightest potentiometer setting is next to off.
As with any old neglected car, it is quite possible that the bulbs blackened out themselves (if both of them still light up), or are dusty or both. If you are itching, you could remove the speedo, inspect and clean up things (mainly the inner side of the glass), even try to find a couple of brighter bulbs to fit.
I have seen that you've tried to remove the speedo cluster and what is left to do, is to disconnect the speedo cable. It's not too difficult, you have to remove the driver's glovebox and try to reach the cable extended securing nut. A probably failed description, but at least i've tried. I think that the owners handbook has some figures that will help. If you manage to undo this, the speedo cluster will pull out, but you still have to disconnect the cables from behind to remove it completely. Refitting is indeed the opposite procedure in theory, but in practice it is a pain to connect properly the cable to the speedo.
Others prefer to remove the dash top instead, but since i 've never tried this method, i cannot really comment on this.

no need to take the glove box out just put your hand up to the left of the speedo and you will feel it or just look in through the loom etc its a bit fiddley but doable :)

That last point is well made Demetris. The display bulbs get brighter as you turn the adjuster up, until you get to the end stop when the bulbs go out

I've never had any problems with speedo lighting levels on the Lady C. The rest of the cabin is so dark that the speedo illumination seems pretty good to me.

Is that normal behavior for the adjuster? If so I'm glad you pointed it out:- one more job off the todo list :?

Yes it seems to be normal behaviour for the adjuster. I'm sure the instrument brightness adjuster on my S2 does the same thing too :?

Hi All,

The "off" function on the dimmer switch is designed for night-time highway type driving. It allows you to turn off the dash lights so you can concentrate entirely on the road.

Same with mine, a 2000TC. Any guesses about the WHY ?

Probably just the variable pot getting to the end of its travel and going open circuit I would think. They're not exactly precision engineered items :D

I find that hard to understand, since the 70MPH speed limit came into being in December 1965, so without the speedo illumination it would be easy to do more  and if it was designed for that, then I would have thought that a car manufactured after that date would not allow the speedo illumination to be switched off:- or is it simply because we were not as safety conscious back then?

I think Rover Tragic is correct, I had an 07 plate saab and that had a night panel, which when used turned off all panel lights except the speedo which partially turned off, ie 0-70mph stayed lit only.
Incidentally if you went to 80mph then the speed lit up the faster you went. ( a mate told me that, how would I know as 70mph is my max, honest officer)
