stromberg 175 cd2

ive got twin strombergs 175 cd2 recond to fit the heads, would this be a upgrade or downgrade from the twin SUs ive removed? albeit worn.
Thanks Karl

Sorry Karl, most definitely a downgrade. Strombergs were developed by Triumph because they didn't have access to SU's at a reasonable price, which were owned by Austin-Morris. After all the mergers that created BL they were all in the same camp anyway! Rover used the Stromberg on certain V8 engined vehicles because it is more tolerent of, for instance, flooding (with water, as in fording a river) and other features. But the king at metering fuel was and remains the SU. Ford used a variety of variants of their own carbs and Webers, all of which started with the premise of trying to control pouring petrol down a hole. Some got the engine to run reasonably successfully, but none came near the SU in matching the petrol flow to the air flow. Strombergs attempt to use the SU principles without infringing their patents, so they are basically a cockamaynie SU that doesn't quite hack it.

The SD1 Rovers sold in Australia were all fitted with Stomberg carburettors prior to fuel injection being introduced. Reason being is that the SU carburettors would not allow the engines to meet the new emission requirements, but running Strombergs would.

If you wish to fit the Strombergs Karl, you'll need to rebuild them with a new kit at the very least, otherwise you won't have a known reference point to start with.

Ron.

ah no karl, you cant use "strangleburgs" on your engine.

im used to them on 6cyl triumphs, and there a pain trying to balance, over fueling, dont like vibration etc.

by all means try them but there not the way to go,

su is the king/queen/princess of carbs.
