Stupid question time....

My V8 is a 1977 model. IF we assume that its the original engine ( maybe) how different would it be from the SD1s?
Im guessing that the factory wouldnt have farted about building two types of engine for two models, surely?
Am I, sort of, warm in thinking that ALL V8 production was for one engine spec when the SD1 was brought out?
Im saying all of this working on the assumption that my memory is correct and the V8 SD1 came out in 76?
If Im wrong, im gonna look a pillock.....

Think the sd1 was 77. The engines are different - rope seals on p6 and different front cover/oil pump compared to SD1 with rubber seals and it's longer water pump nose.

Thanks for that.
Ive just looked up SD1s on Wiki ( you know, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.. ) and it reckons the SD1 V8 was launched in June 76.
Now if that is the truth then why would BL have two differently constructed but the same engines for both V8 models? Im guessing this was another case of super efficient BL not worrying about tooling costs because they had plent y of money anyway
Just seems all a bit strange, but we are talking about the 70s I suppose and there was nowt as queer as the 70s.

Well it depends exactly when it was built as distinct from registered. Cars were hanging about a while by then so it could be quite a lot earlier than the reg date. But in principle you are correct. Very late V8's do have SD1 heads and front covers (bigger oil pump, different oil filter spigot). So there are two quick ways to tell, see if you can figure out what type of oil filter it is wearing and see if you can read the casting marks on the heads.

Hi Rob,

The engine number will provide a good starting point. You will see the compression ratio stamped along side too. The length of the spark plug threads will tell you which type of heads you have fitted. Small valve P6B heads have plugs with 12mm of thread, large valve SD1 heads have 17mm of thread.

I'm afraid engine number is no help at all with this particular question. These very late engines built up with SD1 parts wear P6 series engine numbers....
