Hi I am considering overhauling the carb on my 2000 as it starting to show symptoms of wear.Would It be better to buy a new carb or are overhaul kits just as beneficial and a lot cheaper?Has anyone had any success with these kits? thanks dion.

I got a quote from SU to rebuild my carbs. I seem to remember it being £475 or similar.

I Think a kit is worth a go as that is what I am going to do.

Hi,

I rebuilt my V8 carbs using a combination of NOS kits bought through ebay & other parts bought from 'Gower & Lee' (very helpful).
I compared the parts in the kits to exploded views of the carbs & bought everything else that seemed relevant.
Total cost was around £60 each carb I think, but my year-long running problems were cured instantly. (see previous threads). Well worth it.
Just make sure everything is kept spotless - use compressed air to fully blow through every channel.

Hi all

In defence of those high rebuild costs, I presume the carbs were refurbished (if SU did them) rather than rebuilt, things like spindle bushes replaced, dashpot clearences checked, everything calibrated etc etc, so your getting back a "as new" carb. Its worth checking for play in the throttle spindles as air can leak past and weaken the mixture (apparently)

A rebuild kit will have all new gaskets, float valve's and possibly a new float (well the ones I've had in the past have). But then again if thats all you need (and it saves petrol leaking everywhere, including !intothe engine), thats all you need !! and a damn site cheaper

AGree with @Rumblin_Ron, if the spindles and bushes are Ok, there's really no point in rebuilding the whole carb. And re-kitting is a straight forward process that you can do yourself.

Hi everyone just bought a new carb for my 2000 sc with excellent results , it has transformed the performance and made it even more economical.all for £112 including p+p I wouldnt have hesitated if I,d known the benefits before. cheers dion.

Hi there

I would be very interested to know where you got your new carb from as I may need one soon.

Best regards

I just thought that I would add a comment to this thread.

I looked at getting kits for my HIF6 carbs but after reading this thread I thought I would splash out on getting a speacialist to do the work for me, also saved me time to do other jobs.

I spoke to Gower and Lee. I posted the carbs off and got them back week later rebuilt and looking brilliant. The total including delivery was £224. which is £90 each plus vat & delivery.

The Carbs appear to have been chemically clean which is something I wouldn't have been able to do myself easily. Also they measure the wear on the carb and will replace parts if required.

I don't usually like paying people to do jobs I can do myself but I am well impressed by their work, they were also about half the price of Burlen fuels who own Skinner Union.
