Sump replacement

Seeing as the weather is good today and have no rush to work on the car outside I'm going to replace my leaking sump and gasket. I have a good sump to replace mine with and a new cork gasket. My question refers to the workshop manual saying that the join between the block and the timing cover should be sealed with Hylomar. I have blue Hylomar, I take it this is suitable\what they are refering to? Secondly can i use this as a gasket sealer? I did use it for my waterpump but I'm not sure if it can be used with oil gaskets.

Cheers :)

Chances are you'll be using a cork gasket and I'd use a touch of Wellseal if I had it, if not I'd hold it in place with a touch of grease and leave it at that.

Hi Mike,

Back in the late 1980s I replaced my sump gasket for the first time. I had a new cork gasket and some hylomar. Maybe I did something wrong, having never fitted a sump gasket before, but it leaked. :( So about a week later, I did it again, this time using grease as was advised by the owner of the Rover dealership that I frequented, and as Harvey mentioned above. Again it leaked, what was more, for me at least, the gasket would buldge out between the bolt holes. Third time lucky, new cork gasket and some Permatex #3. Applied to both sump face, gasket and block, let dry for a few mins, then fit all together. Sealed perfectly and no leaks. :)

Ron.
