Swivel Pillar - TOP balljoint undersize?

Ok,

So after my other post now I have a correctly sized replacement bottom balljoint which has been fitted- but....!

The TOP joint now seems undersized, and just falls in. I have an OD of 40.88mm on the joint, against a bore size of 41.17mm.

Does anyone have any topjoint lying about that they can measure for me in comparison?

Sorry to be a pain!

Many thanks

Jamie

Hi, right, I have three of these none of them have any markings on the joint itself.
However two of them have 'Belgium' moulded in the rubber boot and they measure
41.2mm and 41.25mm. The third joint measures 41.5mm. the two 'Belgium' one I
got 2 or 3 years ago, the third one I have had for more than 10 years and I have to
say seems more robustly built. Where are you getting these joints from?

You're not being a pain, this is all valuable information. We need to be wary about
the quality of some these parts, especially these two in particular as we have seen
what can happen when it goes wrong!!

Thanks Colin - you are a star!

I'd rather not say on the forum where I got the joints from as they have so far been extremely helpful, and will hopefully be taking steps to make sure no undersized ones go out!

I think I have been lucky - they were so undersize that it was obvious that they were loose. If they had been slightly tighter and I had drifted them in rather than using the press I would have no idea on how tight they are.

For information the "good" bottom joints both needed about 5-6 Tonnes to drive them home. The first top joint that fitted ok was started off using high tensile bolts, and then pressed home with about 2.5- 3 Tonnes.

I've never had to press in a top ball joint and never had one come out in over 50,000 miles of use.

Replacement balljoint arrived on Saturday and was successfully pressed in. Front suspension is now back on the car!

Thanks everyone :D
