Tacho and ignition

Hi Folks,
I have recently upgraded my old electronic ignition module to a new high energy powerspark unit (with the correct low resistance coil) and a mile down the road the car died and wouldn't start. My Tacho, which I think is the RVI type, failed at about the same time. I have put the old ignition module back in but she still won't fire. As I understand it the tacho runs from a wire between the ignition switch and the + coil terminal. Is it possible some gremlin in this connection explains both the tacho not working and the car not firing? I am getting a spark at the plugs but I suspect inconsistently. I have tried tracing the wire but it disappears out of reach.
