Temp Gauge and Rev Counter

Hi everyone

I'm a new member here please forgive me if any of the questions I ask have been dealt with before. I'm hoping to receive some "pearls of wisdom" from members here to get our car sorted.

I'm no stranger to classic cars and am happy to do most work on them, although electrical stuff is NOT my area of speciality. We now have two British cars being a 65 Triumph Vitesse Convertible and a 74 Rover P6B 3500. We've only just got the Rover as my lovely wife who is 15 weeks pregnant decided to surprise me by purchasing it, saying we needed a classic the whole family can fit in. Needless to say I wasn't going to argue :D

Anyway, its got a few small issues.

First is the temperature gauge wont work, doesn't even move at all. I've replaced the temperature sender but no change. The fuel gauge is spot on. Any thoughts?

Second is the rev counter. The car will start no problem but it fluctuates between 0 and 1,000 rpm only, even when giving it a good squirt. Its running a standard coil and points, not electronic ignition. Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this?

I love driving the car, I'd just like to make sure its not going to overheat and be able to see what rev's I'm doing.

Cheers

hi welcome to the world of p6!! When u replaced the sender did u try and short the wire to earth with the ignition on but the car not started to see if the gauge moved? If it does the sender is u/s im afraid if not then its either a broken connection or the gauge itself. to find out if the wire is ok make yourself up a fly wire (a long length of wire with a crocodile clip on each end) connect one end to the sender wire and with a multi meter set to resistance put it across the end of the sender wire connected to the gauge and the other end of the fly wire. If u have a open circuit then there is a break in the wire somewhere if its a short as it should be then it is the gauge.

As for the rev counter I assume that the engine its self revs above 1000 if it doesn't then I would guess carbs etc otherwise I can only guess that the gauge is knackered as it does get some sort of reading. Hopefully someone with more wisdom than me can give u a better answer
hope this helps
