The paradox of the rear decker seal....

Greetings again all,

Here is a real brain blitzer.
Had a reasonable rear decker seal on Winston (Rover No.1) but despite several efforts never got it to sit 100% true. It always had some loss of contact with the rear window.

So I obtained another one off the 'Bay and decided to fit it to Winston and put his on Rover No.2.
The swapping process began in earnest and I soon had the new one fitted to Rover No.1 but still I could not get it to fit properly.
I sodded about for a while, taking it off and putting it back on until suddenly out of the blue it fit!!

Then I moved on to Rover No.2, replacing the old cracked seal with the reasonable one off Rover No.1. Again it just wouldn't sit right, this time sitting anywhere from 2mm to 5mm from the glass.

I faffed about with the mounts but could not fettle it anywhere near enough to make a difference.

In frustration I quit for the night   and turned to Dr. Ale for comfort. Wasting a whole day in 36deg heat was becoming irksome.

Next morning I started by looking at Rover No.1 to try and see why it suddenly fit perfectly. After a minute or three it clicked

I must of had a massive, frustration based brain fart at some stage because I had only gone and put it on upside down!!!

But here-in lies the rub...... The bloody thing fits better upside down!!!

So nothing ventured, nothing gained. I took the seal off Rover No.2 (for the third f$*@&ing time) and deliberately put it on upside down. LO AND BEHOLD THE EFFING, BLINDING THING FITS SUPERBLY THE WRONG BLOODY WAY UP!!!

So stuff it, they can stay on like they are!!

Anyone had this happen to them??

Thanks for listening,
RT. :D

Wonder if the manufacturer made a blue, thinking that upside down was actually the right way up. :?

Stranger things have been known to happen.

Ron.

Hi Ron,

I briefly considered the idea that they have been incorrectly "extruded", but surely they would just take a copy of the original seal and manufacture accordingly.

I have thrown off a couple of E-mails to the supplier (who shall remain nameless :? ) but funnily enough I have yet to receive a reply :x

You can't fit the seal truly upside down. The lip that tucks under the rear decker has a groove cut into it, into which the steel retaining strip sits (in two halves). This strip is screwed to the underside of the decker panel. The groove faces downwards when the decker panel is back on the car.

Then again, if component monkeys have been at work and extruded the seal incorrectly.......

I wonder if it is the same supplier who has failed to respond to emails from me regarding substandard three quarter panel badges...
