The V8 is home, lets sort out the bodges...

Well today i have been mostly hunting for grot. It was a bit of a pain getting the cover sill off, various types of screw had been used to keep the cover on from underneath but it was a fight the screws were not going to win.
Well....................its not all that bad news actually!! :D
Welding has been carried out in the past by an incontinent pigeon, wat wiv the bird s**t weld splatter adorning the inner sill ( which means there is at least one other person on Planet Earth I weld slightly, only slightly better than) and I have found two areas of grot but nothing, so far, that is overly scary.
First pic is said weld ground down to something more respectable.

This is absolutely solid both on the sill and under the floor, infact there is only surface corrosion inside the car where the sill meets the floor.
Exhibit B:

A good wire brushing with a drill and something that will keep the rot at bay on top of it will see that last for eons.
The grot:

All in all nothing horrendous, infact the cover sill is in a worse state.
I did find something that was strange ( didnt get a pic tho) and that was a very thick piece of steel that looks to be part of the floor, under the rear door, yet sweeps up and is screwed/bolted to the inner sill. It does scream BODGE to me yet, hmmmm, its almost factory looking,, like an extra strengthening plate of somesort. Its probably still a bodge tho, albeit a very, very good one, the metal around it is rock solid.
Im more confident now that i wont find any horror stories ( tho I wont hold my breath) Im expecting the other sill to be this ones equal and im not anticipating major crappola when I finally get the wings off. I suppose, given that its got a new and expensive carpet fitted and had a fair few bob spent on the engine and carbs the car HAS been looked after right up until one of the owners had Stevie Wonder do the spray job.
Im starting to think this car is anything but a dogeared old lemon....
This is Rob reporting from a depressingly damp, misty and winterful Norfolk or summat.

You know that little pin hole in the metal? You know, the one that you grind away at coz you just cant help yourself..................

Bugger!!!!!!!!!
PS: I did say i wasnt holding my breath

Better to find all the rust now rather than later
Very true, infact compared to some of the shockers ive seen on here that are being brought back to rude health, i cannot whinge too much really.
I still love the old girl, thats all that matters.

Day off today. Wish I hadnt started...........

Im not one to "tap" bits of grot, then again i didnt need a sledgehammer to find this. Ive cut 99% of the rust out and, If im REALLY honest, I did have one of those " Shall I carry on or sack it" moments. Assuming I do a competent job of welding fresh metal in, i will still need to look behind the wings, the other side of the car ( not even had the cover sill off that yet) some of the doors MAY be saveable, perhaps one of the rear and front wings with work etc, etc.
Im a bit perplexed as to how parts of the inner sill and floor have already been welded yet the crud i found was "overlooked " to the point where somebody has bought a brand new carpet set and resprayed the bloody car!!!
On the plus side, she only cost me £750 and, worst comes to worst, id get a wodge of that back if i sold her as a spares/repair.
Its not that im being defeatest its just that i have to be a bit hard headed about it, you cant throw good money after bad, right?
Im a bit peeved actually. :(
Im not sure when i will be out there again to work on her, could be another week and its not like i have a big enough garage to work on her in, nope, ive a single jobby and a narrow driveway, not ideal but we cant have everything.
Hmmmmm.
Anyway, ive made a small start in welding some metal in, considering its been over 10 years since i picked up a welder, Im not doing a terrible job, just not the kind of workmanship that i want. Mind you, its still better than the bird sh*t welding thats already on there so thats a bonus. I feel that this will be welding new metal in then welding new metal to the new metal to allow me to weld new metal to the said new metal..........
I shall give it a go, yes, some on here have been in a far, far worse condition than mine and, as much as i have utterly admired peoples guts, skill and determination to put it all right, ive deffo also thought " You must be bleedin mad!!!" In a very nice way, of course!
Oh, I also left her running while i popped indoors and came out to find her boiling like a kettle, the electric fan decided not to come on.
Whats the chances of blown head gaskets now, eh? *//!!!!!**?@ car!!!!!

Don't give up
Cheers fella.
No, Im not giving up on it, I feel better now Ive had a shower, a cuppa and stuff.
I dont think there are THAT many R plate V8s on the road and that alone would be enough for me to keep going at it.
The reality is i love the car and I WANT to keep her on the road.
I bloody shall too. :D

Stand back and think about it Rob . Either stick with it and do it right , one bit at a time ( think their's a jonny cash song their :D ) Might take ages , but if you think it's worth it , do it right :!:

Stina, my problem is that i lack patience!! Id much rather drive the car than have her in bits, the idea that I could have her off the road for months on end turns me cold TBH.
However, you are correct in what you say and I shall be doing it "one bit at a time" to wit, once ive done the drivers side i shall have a quick look around the car for anything that , corrosion wise, will be easily picked up on during an MOT or is an obvious danger. If I dont find anything that needs to be done immediately shall bog it off till later in 2013. That way, the car gets done "one bit at a time" and i still get to drive it AND I dont lose my mojo and stuff when i see it on the drive in bits looking like it will take forever to get back on the road.
Can you see the logic in my plan??? :D
Naturally, if I had another P6 that could be used, this one would be off the road for as long as was needed it wouldnt bother me.
Unfortunately, at the mo, it sits on the drive saying "Drive meeeeeee" and i cant.
I shall do some more next week, overtime can sod right off.
