If it does it at a standstill with your foot off the clutch it could be that the cage for the balls in the first motion shaft bearing has broken and is snagging on something as it turns. When this happens all the balls eventually end up on one side of the bearing, rather than evenly spaced all the way around. Not a good idea. Does the noise get worse as you pull away in first? If so it could be the reverse idler gear hitting first gear on the mainshaft, which is normally caused when someone who doesn't know what they're doing tries to stop the box jumping out of reverse.

Could be lots of other things but it needs more info really, hearing it being the best thing.

I presume you are talking manual box here? I get something similar - its a very quiet ticking noise when under power - seems to be in all gears - I have just changed the oil in the gearbox and I'm fairly sure the noise wasn't there before - but I don't know because the exhaust was blowing slightly before possibly masking the noise. The noise is not present in neutral or with the clutch depressed - only under power. It also seems to disappear when warm. I'm not even convinced that it is the gearbox! Ideas please - I am going on a very long journey in 2 weeks time and need to know

Anything that's only there when driving generally rules out most of the things suggested for the OP, but it could be the same problem with a bearing cage, but on the rear bearing rather than the front. Is the noise roadspeed related, in other words does the ticking occur at the same speed doing say, 30mph in both 3rd and 4 gears, or does it change along with the gearchange?

I'm fairly sure it is connected to road speed, because I thought it might have been the speedo drive at first but that would happen all the time.I'll need to check it again. I must emphasise it's a very quiet tick, not a knock like a small end - I wondered if it was a lazy hydraulic tappet, but if I rev the engine not under load there's no ticking - that's what makes me think it might be gearbox related. I also thought it could be a propshaft joint, but freewheeling there's nothing. I'm going for a longish run this weekend - so if it's anything serious I'm sure it will show up!

Just to let you know - I have just done a 3000 mile round trip to the south of France and back following the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally route and my ticking noise has disappeared - plenty other noises now though!!!!

Dave, that sounds like it was a great adventure. Do you have any photos of your trip you could share? What was the route you took?

Hi

A group of us set of from Scotland on 3rd October to follow the route of the 1964 Monte. There were 5 classic cars, mine was the only P6. We met up in Reims on the 4th and after visiting the old Reims circuit on the morning of the 5th we went via Mulhouse, Chambery and Gap to Menton on the French Riviera arriving on the 9th. We crossed several 'cols' including the famous Col du Turini as used in many Monte Carlo Rallies. On the afternoon and evening of the 10th we took part in an event called the Nuit du Mentonnais which basically followed the old Monte mountain circuit over the Col du Turini again! - there were no time controls but it was basically a flat-out thrash. Some of these French drivers taking part were totally mental!!!! We took it fairly easy in the P6, needless to say. After that it was back home gently via the autoroutes arriving back in Scotland on 15th October. The P6 ran faultlessly, consuming virtually no oil or water which was really amazing considering the climbs and the 28 degree temperatures. We had a slight clonk from the rear supension which turned out to be a bush in the rear radius arm, but that was repaired with a rubber exhaust hanger! The repair is still holding good. Maybe someone can tell me how to put photos on please?
