Timing Chain Damper Pads

Dear Forum,

No sure if I have the part name correctly.

HBOL tells me to use a long feeler gauge to set the gap between the chain and the damper pad at between 00.02 and 00.10 inches. Do not possess a long feeler gauge; is this setting important, please? How about I set them just touching? Any suggestions, please?

Thanks,

Ray

Ray : first, I think you've got your decimal point in the wrong place, more like between 2 and 10 thou clearance i.e. 0.002 and 0.010 . Secondly, with the plugs off the front of the engine you don't actually need long feelers - ordinary ones will do. Third with a little practice , you will be able to set them by eye . Personally, I would not have them touching - what they are there for is to stop the chains thrashing about, and they will wear rather quickly if they are actually touching

Hello Christopher,

Thank you for your reply. You are right, I do have my decimal points in the wrong place.

A previous owner had obviously decided that hammering the plugs further in was preferable to renewing the o-rings, so I had such fun getting them back out again, that I will forgo further practice at setting the pad-gap and attempt to do so correctly first time with an ordinary feeler gauge, as you suggest :)

Best regards,

Ray
