Timing Chains

Is there a recommended mileage for replacing the timings chains? Just wondering with all the mileage I do whether it's a job I need to factor in over the chrimbo hols. Lady C has now done 76k.

In my search of the forum for info on this subject I came across this thread from vaultsman from when he did Rebekah's chains. Unfortunately a lot of the images seem to be missing :(

Thanks

Dave

I don't know of any change interval, and if they're not exhibiting any problems I'd leave well alone. I've never had a chain snap, and I've only had one where the bottom tensioner broke or fell off or something, which made the chain jump and bend the valves when the engine was switched off.

Thanks Harvey.

One of them is a bit tinkly, has been for a while, but apart from that no issues. I wondered if they suffered from stretching, but I guess the tensioners would cope with that?

Bottom chains are notorious for that noise, especially at idle. The tensioners aren't quite taking up the slack. If it's something you want to improve I'd suggest dropping the sump and making sure the plug hasn't come out of the tensioner, making it lose oil pressure, (and have a look at the rubber pad as well, and the security of the guides), and check the end and main shells, as if they're worn that causes the same problem. Eliminate those as causes before blaming the chains themselves.

I had the main and big end caps off for inspection about 10k miles ago and the bearings showed very little wear. I'll have a look at the bottom tensioner when I get a chance.

Thanks H
