Timing light problems

I don't know if anyone can help me with this one but I have been trying to set the timing on my 2000 TC, it has a timing mark on the pulley at the front (which according to the manual should be on the flywheel) when I have used the timing light I have put the sensor on no.1 ignition lead as per the manual instructions, this only worked intermitantly at first and then completely gave up. The revs where a bit unstable (what else can you expect from the wife!) however the light did not work even at different revs. When the sensor was put on no.2 or 3 ignition lead it worked but not no.4. Suspecting something was wrong with the light I tried it on my usual car and it worked fine. Any ideas what might be wrong and how I might solve it?
Thanks,
Martin

Hi there,
I've had similar problems in the past with non copper cored/silicon HT leads. Depending on the type of gun and in turn which type of inducting pickup is used this can sometimes cause the problems you have. I made a connector up that fitted inline between the dizzy cap and lead and it seemed to cure it. Incidentally iirc isn't it number 4 lead you use for the timing? It's been a while since I tackled one so I could be wrong.

Number one plug is the right one but I've never had this problem, not much help here. Mine (old Snap-On one)just clips on :?

Yep, number one it is, just rooted out the manual. I was using number 4 to set up the static timing that's where the confusion came from there. Hope you get it sorted.

The timing light should be the same brightness on all cylinders and not affect the running of the engine
Is the HT current tracking to earth and shorting out one cylinder ?
