Towing capability of a 3500S

Hi alabbasi,
From memory it's about 1400kg (about the car's weight) although probably not too advisable at this limit. Towbar weight is around 70kg I think, so the outfit has to be pretty well balanced. The handbooks do give the figures I remember.
I have towed an average caravan (c. 1300kg) with my 'S'. There's certainly the power & torque, but it can be a bit of the 'tail wagging the dog' as P6s are not that much heavier than other cars. Compared to the Discovery V8 we use there's no comparison. You soon see why people use 4x4's to tow caravans, horseboxes & the like - they can tow 3500kg - and you feel in full control when you use them!

I consulted my 73 3500s owners handbook on the above. I was amazed to find it gives a bewildering range of loads based on gradients, ( 20,25, 33.3%, etc.) and altitude ( 1000,
6000,9000 feet above sea level,etc). I would say that provided you avoided Mt.Snowden and the Swiss Alps and you had a trailer fitted with brakes, you could safely haul 1250kg (25cwt). I have successfully carried greater loads over short distances without any problems (unbraked). As long as you remember you are towing a heavy load and drive and brake accordingly, you should not have any problems. The P6 and the SD1 were always touted as good towing vehicles.
