TradeMe NZ, early V8 Waikato

I reckon thats UK built, late '69. Later than that and it would have the big no small no speedo (like Lucky, which is Aug '70 reg). Unusual in having the optional rev counter. I'd say the interior is contempory with the restoration, theres a mix of trim colours - ligh shin bins, black door cards etc. So I'd guess the (rather nice) velour seats are a local retrim.

I agree with your build spec Chris. Chassis # is 42600629 which makes it UK export and late '69. Looks like the mileage is in the range of 250,000. It's quite nice but they want $10,000 for it??? I would have said $3-4000 at best. The interior has been mucked about way too much for the big money.
Were the rev counters unusual in these? Every series one V8 I've seen (which isn't many) has had one.

Just saw that "answer to question" on the Auction for $10K + agree wiv ya, KiwiRover, that's silly money

Got this letter from the NZ Transport Agency re: vintage rego. as my beastie is a '72

"Once a vehicle is 40 years or older it is no longer subject to Continuous Vehicle Licensing (CVL) and the licensing and registration fees are reduced.

A vehicle turns 40 years old on the first of January regardless of the month it was registered. For example, a 1960 vehicle would turn 40 years old on the first of January 2000.

Our system recognises the year a vehicle turns 40 and automatically adjusts any details as necessary (i.e. the licence fees are automatically amended to reflect the new fees).

Kind Regards

NZAA has very competitive insurance rates for "Over 40's" too under their "Classic" scheme based on your average mileage driven per year

If your Rover(s) were imported, the date of first registration overseas becomes the "true" date ( but not the date of manufacture )

The optional rev counter is very unusual, but not unknown, in UK S1 V8's. I had one retrofied to Lucky.

Chris

They say they would like $10k, but we'd all like £/$10k if we sold one of our cars, unless it was actually worth more of course which is a very rare occurance with these cars.

I would love that car, a restoration it has obviously been but still a series 1 V8 in NZ is quite rare, be pretty sure it a UK build because of roof mounted aerial and no power steer.

Certainly is rare. We didn't build series one V8s here so you don't see many, also series ones never had power steering. (unless some crafty bugger has retro-fitted it)

Maybe someone emigrated ex-UK + brought the car with them... it was near impossible to import a car as an individual back then; NZ still had "British Preferential Tariff" ( until '72 IIRC ) but that didn't stop import duties on motor vehicles being near 100% of their landed value, you would have needed to be in possession of "overseas funds" and buy an import licence ( or indent off another importers licence )

All gone now; NZ is one of the most liberal economies anywhere but back then it was run like a Stalinist state

That's why CKD imports came about: Parts duty ex-UK was 20%; ( but duty on all leather products was 50% to protect the local leather industry. That's why local assembled Rovers didn't have leather seats ) NZ-OZ Free trade agreement gave the Kiwis access to Australia for the Rovers + NZ got OZ assembled Austin/Morrises of various stripes, including some rather wonderful 1275GT Minis...

Probably not. UK export models (426) like this were what was sold new here. Imported fully built to sell alongside the NZ built SCs and usually UK export with some NZ built TCs.
If the car had been a private import, it would most likely have been a UK home market model. (425)

Hi There both of mine are series ones the V8 reg in NZ 1970 has had rev counter from original need to give a little tap sometimes to get it going !
