Trick to getting the bonnet pin aligned?

Hey,
Is there a trick for getting the bonnet pin (the bit with the spring rather than the hooked bit) aligned properly? I have refitted my repaired and repainted bonnet and have been doing battle with the pesky thing for several hours now to get the hinges lined up and the pin in the correct position.

It's either too loose and therefore the catch isn't engaging to hold the bonnet down or is it too tight and not allowing the release mechanism to unlatch the bonnet.

Any knack to it, or anything I am likely missing on how it should be done?

Cheers,

Al

simple one
stick a piece of masking tape over the latch slam panel and lower the bonnet gently to the tape until it makes a mark and then adjust the catch as required.

hope that helps
