Tunnel

Does anybody knows what is this oval shaped thing for on the transmission tunnel, just in front of the rear seat?
For an alternative ashtray perhaps?
Normaly it is covered by the carpet, but i discovered this today as i am reparpeting my 2000.
Also i am quite impressed by the lack of any sound insulation at the bulkhead, inside the car. There are no signs that something was fitted and removed later too.
Now i am trying to wedge in as much of the stuff as it will take.
Thankfully there is the space for this.

P4 has one for checking the gear box oil level from the inside

Is this near the oil level plug ?

Nowhere near it. Closer to the diff than the 'box. The P6 has a big rubber bung for the gearbox oil at the front of the tunnel.

maybe for when the car was built at rover!!hanging the car or wheeling the shells around..
