Tyres for p6 rostyles - Which size

I was sure that this had been discussed on hear before but I can't find the thread.

Can any one tell me what is the best size tyre to fit to a 15 by 5.5 P5 rostyle so it will clear on a P6?

BB

Hi BB the post you are looking for is HERE the reason I remember is that I contributed to it, Luckily Johnny went out and measured up some tyres to find the right size and I think his conclusion was 195/50 R15. Johnny if your out there can you confirm these will fit?

Cheers Ali thats the one I was thinking of.

My wheel are 5" between the rims as well and are definately P5 so I'll go for the 195/50 although it's a very low profile.

Did you fit these tyres to yours Johnny, do you think there is room for a little more profile?

I've just reconditioned my wheels http://www.geocities.com/bblongman/Wheels.htm

I don't think I'll be competing with Richard Spratley's wheel recon service but it only cost me about 50p a wheel instead of £130!

Your wheels look quite good - may I suggest a spray over with a clear laquer may delay the return on the rust.... I have a similar problem on some centre lock minilites (15"er's on an MGBV8)

Did you lacquer yours then? I worry that if the rust got under the lacquer it might look worse in the long run.

Hi BB,
Just a quickie, on your web page when you say boiling in caustic what exactly does this entail, from what I understand caustic is not the sort of stuff you really want to boil, also I know you have mentioned it before on here but which acid do you use? I have an old plastic central heating header tank which looks like it will accommodate my rostyles which are in a bad way as well, thought I might give it a go.

Oops, sorry BB ignore that last message, Its all expalained on Your Webpage thanks for that, and might I just say those pics are going to make my heater box re-build soooo much easier, you are a star

The caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) you can buy as a powder from hardware stores and the local one I use gives me a discount on bulk. You'll need about a kilo to every 2 gallons.

Watch out though as it'll attack aluminuim very vigourously.

Phosphoric acid is a bit of a problem as most companies won't sell to private induviduals. Ask around though as it's used in lots of cleaning products, school labs etc so you should be able to find a contact sooner or later. Phosphoric is also brilliant at cleaning aluminuim castings without the inherent problems of bead blasting.

None of it's paticularly dangerous but remember to always add acids or alkalis to water and not the other way round. Goggles are advisable small caustic burns on the arms heal but eyeballs are a bit more delicate!

Well worth getting yourself set up as it makes restoration of rusty bits of car a pleasure rather than a chore.

Thanks 50 does seem awfully low: I think i'll get a mate to put a secondhand tyre on and check clearances first as I'd like to get as higher profile as possible.

Hi Bennett,

A tyre width up to 205 will fit --- the Denovo tyre was 205 section, 65% profile on a metric wheel of 375mm diameter. However, if the P5 wheel offset is different from the Denovo then a 205 tyre on a P5 Rostyle could scrub the wheelarch when cornering. Try a used 205 tyre on a Rostyle at each corner and see what clearance you have; then you know that a 195 will also fit. Check the rear in particular --- compress the suspension by jacking the car up.

A 205/15/65 tyre has a rolling radius of 99.4% of the original 185/14/80. A 195/15/70 is fractionally nearer to the original at 100.4%. These differences are academic, and are of no practical significance.

Cheers John, I'll definately experiment first. Your right about the rear; I was very suprised to see how close the back of the tyre runs to the rear chassis leg although I think it must move out as the suspension is compressed and the driveshaft becomes more vertical.

Not to worried about rolling radius as the the speedo will need recalibrating anyway.
