Tyres for the 3500

I have searched the internet for tyres for my 3500 lately, and there are a few options. To have the correct 185/80- 14 HR tyres there are mainly 2 options; Vredestein classic and Michelin MXV- P. These are very expensive at appr £ 100 per corner for the Vredesteins, and £ 200 for the Michelins. Are they worth it? Any experience with these tyres anyone?

I saw the prices of those and went for a cheaper brand. Guess it depends what sort of use your car gets?

Hei Barten,

Sounds like you're specific about tyres with period-style tread pattern, but for the car there are cheaper moderns in 185/80 that have had good reviews for comfort and (wet) handling. One such is this Hankook Optimo K715 at around £55 a corner. They're on my list for next time. In 195/70 there's much more choice...

The Hankook tyre looked good, but I see it is only T-rated for the speed index. I would prefer to have a H-rated tyre. What about 205/70-14 ? they are 1,51 % less in circumference so not too bad there. Do they fit the normal 5,5" V-8 steel rim and will the rubber foul anywhere? In 195/70- 14 there are a lot to choose from but the 3,66% difference in circumference is on the high side I think.

Usual rule with tyre sizes is not to go above 1 size from std spec,ie if 185 only go 195 as others will be too wide for the rim.
Sure some have fitted 205's but there maybe a clearance issue, with 195/70 you are pretty safe!
Ive been using them for the last 10yrs,but do have a set of correct size Dunlop SP Sport in stock.

The calculator I found says 1.38 percent... My Rostyles have 205/70s on them, they should be 5.5" like the standard steels but I'm clueless about any differences in offset. They didn't foul on the D post and looked chunky enough to complement the car 8)

Here's something by Toyo that also sounds good for the money, esp. for comfort and noise. There's also a Nankang from the same dealer that might seem acceptable but that's M+S. It's tricky getting a good selection in our part of the world.

Thanks for the tips all of you, I'll will decide later this month, dont need new tires the next 14 days-

I ended up with the Vredestein Sprint Classic HR 14 for about £370 for the set. I am very pleased with the result, after driving 400 km's yesterday they feel surefooted and smooth. Happy with the choice.

reagards, Barten.

Very quiet they are, adds to the magic carpet feel. This car with these tyres are quieter than most modern cars I drive. Very pleased.

That's brilliant... Now you can waft quietly out onto the Atlantic Highway and take those photos... :D

Here is an old winter photo from the Atlantic Road. I have shown it before, but can't find it so here it is. On the old tyres though.

Nice mood! Very cool indeed... Incidentally, did you get it from my neck of the woods by any chance? That number makes it a recent (2002ish?) import, too..?

Nice picture Barten! wich place is the road? I am alway's interested in Norway pictures because i worked there for 1,5 year.

I put x4 Nexen 175 80 R14 on my car about a year back. I haven't done too many miles. However, so far, I am reasonably impressed with them. I was driving along the motorway in heavy rain (lot of surface water) a few nights ago and they seemed to grip just fine. In fact I hardly notice any diffence between wet and dry. I noticed that my spare is looking a bit ropey and keep meaning to stick it into the tyre place to see if I can get the same type fitted to it.

The kind I have fitted are Nexen SB-802 M+S (Mud and Snow). So the unusual tread might account for the "retro" look and explain the good grip you get in surface water. You aren't supposed to use M+S at higher speeds and I've heard it said they wear out faster on dry surfaces. At the speeds I drive at and with the weather we have in West of Scotland, I don't think I need to worry too much :) .
