Carbibles is a damn good site, and certainly my site of choice for wheels/tyres info. Page 4 (I think) has a calculator for rolling radii comparisons.

EDIT: Your 3.7mm difference is the difference between 80 and 82 aspect ratio. Back in the day, 82 was the (usually unquoted and usually unobtainable now) standard figure.

Sorry to say this, but as the tyres were sitting in store for however long...do you know how old they are?

thanks for that..... brilliant site
this is a quote from it ...
The English MOT (road-worthiness test) manual states: Unless marked otherwise, "standard" car tyres have a nominal aspect ratio of 82%. Some tyres have an aspect ratio of 80%. These have "/80" included in the size part of the tyre marking e.g. 165/80 R13. Note: Tyres with aspect ratios of 80% and 82% are almost identical in size and can be safely mixed in any configuration on a vehicle.

that has made me feel better thanks.

I will check the age of the tyres tomorrow however I have a sneaking suspicion they were ordered for me last year and I never went and got them fitted as I had a big expense getting the car through its mot and then forgot about the tyres.

thanks for all the responses and apologies for being a miserable and argumentive old so and so

many thanks

hi all, im getting fed up with this now.... I feel I might as well stand in the middle of Piccadilly circus and throw my money in the air least that way it will hopefully do some good. I checked the dates on the three tyres I bought the youngest one was made in 05 the oldest one has only three numbers and I couldn't see a triangle so I am assuming its from the 80's . I called up the tyre company and complained and got told well they have to put a date they were made on but it don't mean anything. I told them well if that's the case u put a tyre that was made in the 80's on your car and drive down the motorway at 70 with your family. the answer I got was well there isn't any other tyres that are 185/80/14 so what u want me to do. I called the head office and complained and got told the same garbage about the dates then they said well the best we can do is get some new tyres in and then charge u the difference. they then told me that the only ones they could get was either van tyres or vintage ones at over 300 quid each.

I'd read up on the sale of goods act and "goods being fit for purpose" before speaking to them again. 10+ year old tyres are not fit for purpose. Either way if they sold them as new and they're not new, but are instead new old stock then they have committed an offence.

A quick search on blackcircles.com yielded the following tyres :-

Ask for the date codes before buying any tyres.

hi, the place I went to was a difference of 30 quid a corner instead of 120. I guess u get what u pay for. I didn't dream he would of had tyres that were made in the 80's if indeed that's what it is. I guess they have me over a barrel though because if I ask for my money back they will want the tyres back. in which case I have no tyres for the car. only way out that I can see is let them order vintage tyres in and pay the difference.

every little job I do even the simplest thing turns into a week long fight that costs 20 times what it should do.

I'd tell them you've found tyres on Blackcircle.com so they are available. Ask them to source new tyres at £70-£90 ea and fit and you'll pay the difference or refit your old tyres and refund in full.

The Michelin MXV-P isn't cheap but they are great. Nothing matches this tyre for handling due to the quality of the carcase. The only reason to buy anything else is price. https://www.borrani.com/en/michelin-tyres/mxv-p/185hr14-michelin-mxv-p.html

The original equipment tyre for the other P6 cars is now being made again by Pirelli https://www.cinturato.net/tyre-fitment-guide/

I had the Michelins on the front of my car until recently. They are no better than the Vredesteins IMHO. What you pay for as a classic car owner is the supposed 25 year lifespan (10 in use).

Interesting about the Pirellis. Sadly they don't make the 185x14 for the V8. This was my favourite tyre I ever had with my old car.

Fair enough. I guess the Michelins were half worn when I got the car. Neither (to me) felt as good as the Pirelli Cintuaratos I used years ago.

I've seen the Michelins at €325 each to which there is no justification whatsoever.

Great to know that 165HR 14's are being made, however they are pricey, also a disclosure of your interest in the initial post reads better in my eyes.
