"Unknown" Rover P6 Shift Lever

Hello everybody,

being new here please let me introduce myself. Stefan from Munich, driving a 1975 Morgan +8 in summertime. Now that car has a Rover 4-speed gearbox, and the Shift Lever is broken and the bottom end worn out. Moreover the Reverse Locking Sleeve is beyond repair....

So initially I was looking for 3500 parts:
  • 594221 / 599687 / FRC1353 Shift Lever
  • 594215 / 599683 „Reverse-gear-locking sleeve“
  • 571993 und 540959 Bearing Shift Lever
  • 2 x 591353 Bearings sleeves selector shaft
However that might not be right. A couple of years ago I already tried to replace the reverse locking sleeve, but got only two that were to long. (see picture) Respectively the 3500 gear lever will be to long and not work underneath the Morgan dash.

Now a gentlemen has explained to me, that the gear lever Morgan used back in 1975 might not be from the P6 3500 but instead from the 2000 (Series 2) or 2200 P6 (part number 540686). Can I please ask for your advice in verifying this? As you can see in the picture the reverse locking sleeve is about 110mm, the whole gear lever is about 230mm long.

Finally if somebody would know where to get these precious parts, I'd be extremly grateful. In return I'd be happy to give away the two longer reverse locking sleeves, if somebody needs them.

Many thanks indeed, Stefan

AFAIK there are four different gearlevers, Series 1, which is the shortest, Series 2 Short, which is slightly longer, Series 2 long with a plastic acorn on the bottom, and Series 2 long with a steel acorn on the bottom, which is the same length as the previous long one. If you have two sleeves that are too long, then I'd guess thet you have the very shortest lever fitted. The problem with that is that is for a Series 1 selector set up, it's not designed to work with the 3500S remote, so it's possible that is why your lever has snapped. Series 1 is for 4 cylinder models only, there wasn't a manual V8 Series 1, all the rest are for all the Series 2 models. You can only use the Series 2 long gearlever with the steel acorn if you have a plastic bush in the selector rod on the gearbox.

I can't give you specific lengths though.

Harvey, i had the impression that all the plastic acorn levers (together with their sleeves) were interchangeable.
Do you know why the series 1 lever cannot work with a remote system (and the opposite) ? Different ball to accorn distance maybe?

I can't say why, it's just one of those things rattling around in my head. That said you may well be right, but if that were the case I can't see why the Series 1 lever wasn't used in the early Series 2.

I have used a lever with was supplied with the plastic bushing in a 66 Rover 2000. I did not use the plastic bushing which was supplied. However the rattling of metal on metal was undesirable. I did change it to a used lever with the plastic acorn, but I carry the one with the metal acorn, in case the acorn part falls off, which they had a tendency to do. The plastic sleeve will not fit in the early remote system.

I might have what you want. I'm still unpacking and sorting my newly acquired parts and I know there are a couple of manual levers and sleeves in there. I'm also on the other side of the planet so if you can't get anything locally Pm me in a couple of weeks and I'll know what I have and if it's any good.

The broken shaft you have there appears to be the S2 short lever. I'm basing that on the plastic acorn and the distance between the acorn and the ball part of the lever, which appears to be too large for a S1 lever.

I've got some S1 levers in the garage, I'll see if I can lay a hand on one quickly to confirm.

Yours
Vern
