ive got a 1969 p6 v8 series 1.
what is the correct engine temp.
when I go out for a drive it goes upto just on edge of red (120) then it drops down a bit.
is this normal or should I investigate more
ie coolant system flush or even fit a bigger rad ?
anybody else had this issue?
cheers

When the temp drops down a bit, that's the thermostat opening. If it then remains within the green area I wouldn't worry about it if you're not experiencing any other symptoms or problems. The temperature guage isn't a precision instrument.

Hi Paul,

It could be any number of reasons from low coolant level through to a blocked radiator. Given though that the temp climbs close to the red and then drops back does suggest a thermostat problem, which in turn could be down to low coolant level.

Check by taking the cap of with the engine cold and off. Start the engine and inspect the coolant level. It should be approx 1" (25mm) below the base of the filler tube. If below, fill to the base of the filler tube and refit the cap. Road test.

If the problem persists, you will need to investigate further. The cooling system should be flushed and refilled periodically, the period being a reflection of the requirements of the coolant being used. Some are 12 months, others all the way through to five years. If you are not sure, drain and flush the system and then refill.

If the problem still persists, replace the thermostat ensuring that the jiggle pin or calibrated bleed notch is at the 12 o'clock position. You can choose between either an 82 or 88 degree stat depending upon where you live.

I fitted a new thermostat a while back.
I did check the water level in the rad it was about 1inch from top of rad (top of internal cores).
ive had no issues but when I see the temp guage reach edge of red I was just courteous.
I am thinking of fitting a larger rad that jon wadhams supplies and getting system flushed at the same time.
cheers
