ive got a p6 v8 and I have fitted a stainless exhaust .
im no boy racer but im looking to improve the exhaust note a touch so you can hear that v8 burble on tickover.
spoke to a chap recently at a show who suggested a cherry bomb pipe but not sure if that would over do it.
is it possible to cut out the middle box or does this have any running issues.
any suggestions or help please
kind regards
paul

Hi Paul,

A cherry bomb will make the exhaust sound 'scatty', whilst deleting the muffler (middle box) will result in it being very 'drummy'. The exhaust system left the factory with a muffler and a resonator at the rear. Does yours still have both fitted?

You can keep the muffler, but change it to a flow through design rather than one with baffles. This will increase the exhaust note volume without too many negative effects.

This is what mine sounds like with the above. The brown panels have since been replaced. Bare in mine that the engine is a 4.6, and that does make a big difference with respect to the depth of the exhaust note.

what does the resonator look like I have a silver cylinder type thing rather than the oval shaped tube at the back

Try lowering the idle speed a bit if you can. The unequal length exhaust from each bank (on the auto) really gives a distinctive note this way.

Hi Peter,

My engine idles at approximately 650rpm in Park, and around 600rpm or a touch higher in Drive.

Mine sounds really excellent. Muscle burble at low rpm and nascar snarl at top end. Managed this by cutting the rear silencer off totally and fitting double pipes out the back.

It's starting to come to bits a bit now so am on lookout for other solutions, replicating the beautiful noise

My local motor factor sells plain exhaust pipe for about £6/ft, plus loads of generic adapters and bends. It's only mild steel, but it's a cheap way of experimenting with deleting silencers until you're happy with the sound.

Mine all sound different, probably because all the exhausts are different.

Ethel had a new stainless steel unit fitted last year and someone asked me if there was a 5.0 litre engine in the car because it sounds so mean when it strikes up. In fact Ethel has an ordinary 3.5 litre engine but there are only two parts to the exhaust, not three.

Mine is 2 piece=1 left 1 right and is 5 litres-- car sits at idle rocking with a burble that makes a chev 350 sound weak and at full throttle could make your ears bleed :D
going on you tube weekend--will post on here
