V8 starter motor

As we know, the solonoid hangs down so the Range Rover ones with a side-mounted solenoid won't fit. But, can the motor & solenoid be taken off a Range Rover starter and fitted to the P6 starter motor casting that bolts to the engine (sorry, don't know what else you'd call this bit)? Just asking before I shell out for a P6 type because new Range Rover starters seem cheap in comparison.

Hi, there are 2 sizes of starter on P6b,s and early Range Rovers and the component parts
are interchangeable between, if the same size. later Range Rovers have a smaller, geared
starter, and are more common which maybe what you are finding cheaper. Do you have
space constraints on the trike? If not they are an alternative and do spin the engine over
quicker.

Thanks Colin, the Range Rover starters I was looking at are the earlier ungeared type that look to be of a similar style to the P6 starter apart from having the solenoid on the side - I can't fit the side-mounted solenoid type on mine because as in the car, there's no room at the side.
Having taken mine apart, the commutator looks like half a grapefruit rather than the more usual cylindrical type so are you saying I would need a Range rover starter with the same type of motor? I wasn't aware there were 2 different sizes on V8 P6's so need to be sure the bits will fit - I don't think the seller will refund me if its the wrong one and I've taken it apart

Hi, the two starter motors are different to each other by size and appearance.
The earlier one has a larger diameter motor with a flat aluminium end plate
covering the brush gear and is notable by being awkward to get the top bolt in.
The later one has a smaller diameter motor with a barrel type Aluminium end
cover. Because the motor diameters are different the front castings are as well,
so when you know the differences it is easier to spot in photo's.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I can get a modern reduction-geared starter for just under £200  delivered and a brand-new 'old-fashioned' RR starter for £70 but I'm not completely certain the RR one is the same. Plus I've then got to strip mine and the new one and rebuild one from the bits so am going to buy the modern one. Its more expensive but will be quicker to get me back on the road and I can always rebuild the original at a later date.

I've bought one (Powerlite RAC318) but although it turns over ok it won't start, it always started easily before when the old starter was working.
There isn't a terminal on the solenoid for the cold start lead and the little leaflet that came with it says if it won't start then connect the lead using "a large diode".
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what sort of diode did you use?
