v8 Tyre Size

Hi all,

Could i ask what are the correct original standard tyre size for the V8 ??. I have just managed to get an Mot on my 75 V8 after a few months of restoration so back on the road she goes after a 7 year break !!. The old chap at the garage who sorted my brakes advised me that the tyres are well past their sell by date and to replace ASAP also that they are not the correct size being 165R14. Am i correct in thinking that the correct original size is 185/80/R14 for a V8 and also whats the widest size that you could fit to standard rims without clearance issues would the widest be 195/80/R14,

Cheers

Hi, Yes on both counts, standard size is 185/80/14 and 195/80/14 will fit although that
will introduce a slight speedo error. That is assuming that it has the V8 wheels which are
5½" wide.

205/70 series tyres will fit, certainly on most cars. The front is ok, the D post at the rear could be a problem, all depends on QA at the time.

That size in a 205 is very nearly the same as 185/80.

If you have 165 tyres, I'd measure the wheels and make sure they're v8 wheels, as i think 165 is the right size for a 4 pot?

165's are correct for a 4-pot example as they had narrower rims than the V8's did.

Indeed you can get the original Pirelli Cinturatos in 165R14 but not 185R14 at the moment.

Whatever sizeis chosen, please ensure that you don't get talked in to buying van tyres as there are loads around for this size of rim for very little money.

Thanks for the comments guys,

i have a sneaky feeling that i don't have V8 wheels on my V8 but 4 cylinder ones. When i bought my car around 8 years ago it was in a right state, it has sat in my garage for around 7 years awaiting restoration and came with no history but was told that the previous owner had a spares car and used it to rescue mine. I have noticed a different reg no etched on the rear door windows, I assume that the donor car was a 4 cylinder as the doors do not have the long arm rests of a v8. It also looks as if the wheels have been swapped also, i will take the spare down to the tyre place and get them to remove the tyre and measure the rim to confirm i will have to have a think then about the best option. Hadnt banked on having to replace all 4 wheels, funds are getting a bit low now after a 2 months spares buying spree, but after spending so much time and money i cant be burbling around on ancient tyres,

Cheers

They should be stamped with the size, to save all the messing about.

It is but usually stamped on the inside of the well. Tyre places will have a big pair of calipers with which to measure the rim without removing the tyre. Takes about five seconds.

I have a couple of v8 steel wheels going spare, you can have them for £10 each if you end up needing some.
Depends where you are as to whether that's useful or not I guess. Posting them would probably be another £10 each.
I'm in west sussex..

Thanks for the offer of the wheels Jim, i will bear that in mind, will see if i can see any sizes stamped on my rims as suggested, if not i will pop one down to the tyre place to confirm the width,

Cheers Colin
