Value of my 1973 Rover 2000 SC

Hi All,

My girlfriend and I are buying our first home together and as a result I am having to consider selling my beloved 1973 Rover 2000 SC in order to raise funds for the moving van, furniture, solicitors costs etc. I wanted to ask you for a fair valuation before I make a decision whether to sell it as I am very proud of my Rover and dont want to give it away. It has just passed its MOT without needing any work done although it did get an advisory on a patch which has been poorly welded underneath. There was no hole evident though so it passed. In the last year or so it has had it's rear brake calliper stripped down, new seals put in and new pads. The wind down window rubbers were perished and have been replaced with new ones, and it has had a new water pump fitted. Also two new tyres and I added some ET headrests for added safety.

The car has been perfectly reliable and has never once broken down of failed to start on me. The upholstry is pretty tidy although there is some cracking on the back of the rear seat which I have taken a picture of. The paintwork is ok but not great as it has a few blemishes of which I have taken pictures. The paint is bubbling slightly on one of the front quater panels.

I realise of course it is hard to value it based on the pictures alone so I have tried to give an honest description. In the end it is worth what the buyer will pay but as I said I am not keen to get rid of it so am looking to set a reserve at a fair price both for myself and for any potential buyer.

Pictures to follow...

Oops, these pictures are far too big. How do I scale them down? I suppose it shows up the details though...

If you are using photobucket when you click on the phot you can choose to resize to a smaller scale :)

I'd say somewhere between £1000, and £1500 really. Looks a nice car, but I should imagine that the figures I've given will be around what you'll get. If it's tax exempt it'll be closer to £1500, and if it's not, it'll be towards the bottom end. Good luck with the sale, and I'm sorry to read that you're selling your car.

Thanks for that opinion :)

I've not decided for certain whether to sell it yet, although I dont think I will be able to keep two cars as the new house is sucking up all my savings and more. Getting on the housing ladder is expensive! I was tempted to think about selling my modern Mondeo instead and keeping the rover. However with fuel prices how they are that's probably not the best idea as I do go on long runs and the diesel Mondeo is much more fuel efficient.... Not as fun though.

Sadly, this is not a tax exempt rover.

Congrats on the house etc. That's an absolutely huge step!

I think I'm with Frazzle here. It's pretty presentable, nice colour and long MoT, so should make £1,000 on Ebay without too much trouble. It also has an interior to die for! Have you any notion how rare that colour of Herringbone Cloth flat pleat is? I could believe that helping it up towards the £1,500, but don't even dream of ever finding another one like it. If you were prepared to put it on one of the Classic Car selling sites, I suspect you could advertise it at £2,000 and take £1,750, but they can take quite a while to achieve that.

Thanks Chris,

I did not know that I had a rare interior. If I could get in the ballpark of what you suggested I would let it go. There is no urgency to sell it so I could advertise it and wait for the right buyer to come along. First of all I will see if my Mondeo gets through it's MOT next week though....

If I do sell it I would definitely want to get another P6 in a few years time when finances allow, although I agree that I doubt i'll ever find another like it. It's a gem :( . Still, starting a life with my girlfriend is worth every sacrifice, as she is even more of a gem :D .

Well said that man! Coming on a forum like this it's sometimes important to remember that a P6 is only part of life and not life itself.

I searched for five years for a Herringbone cloth interior and then only managed the (relltively) common black version!

Keep the Rover .The Rover hasn't got a dual mass flywheel , particulate filter and injection pump all waiting to fail !
