Has anyone had experience of redoing a vynil roof ?
Who sells the material ?
I don't see it can be that hard as it doesn't have seams, like on my old Corsair 2000E, whick have to be centralised and straight
Any advice gratefully received
Dave

You could try Woollies Woollies Website They sell all sorts of car trim materials, I couldn't see anything actually listed for a roof, but I guess if you give them a call they could advise.

As for replacement, the first step would be removing the roof panel... Other than that I'm a bit stuck, but I'm sure somebody will have done it before.

I've got visions of a big tin of Evo-Stick !

hi,
it is a two man job and i have just done one for a customer. he got the vinyl from woolies. a friend of mine used glue from a tin and got one or two bumps in it from excess glue. woolies will provide you with aerosols which in my opinion give a much better finish. you will need the roof off if you want to do it right as it should fold underneath by at least an inch. cut it roughly to shape, don't worry about the extra that will go underneath, that will be trimmed off later when you turn it over. lay it on the roof, i started at the front ( does not matter which end ) fold a third of it back on itself then cover the back third of the vinyl up with newspaper ( as you don't want glue on it )spray the roof and the vinyl you have turned back, wait the time it tells you on the can then fold over on to the roof working from the middle out to get rid of any air bubbles ( use a clean cloth to press it down ) fold the vinyl back on the bit you have done and repeat twice more. when done turn roof over ( don't forget to put some towels down or similar you don't want to ruin the nice job you have just done ) you can now start trimming down the material for folding over, cut slits where ever it curves ( corners ) and try it dry before spraying glue on it.

p.s. give it two coats of looking at and cut once ??????

I just got a sample from woolies - so its moved up my list a bit now! I plan on fitting it to a spare painted roof panel - do you reckon I should take to back to metal first - woolies would no commit! (Ian its for DTB the car you done the base unit on last summer)???

hi,
if you look under a vinyl covered roof they are painted in some sort of primer, never cover a bare metal one.

Vinyl is reasonably water-proof but not totally, and I suspect a bare metal roof would rot pretty badly under there !

I was hoping the roof wouldn't have to come off. If it does , I
may as well look out for a panel with a Webasto and do the job properly
I'm pretty sure mine has been done with the roof on as you can see edges in the gutters and I have a moulding above the rear window presumably to hold the vynil down
Looks like the bodgers have been at work

the vinyl roof on my series 1 estate seems to have a layer of foam between the vinyl and the aluminium roof panel.has anyone had any experience fitting one of these?mine is in desperate need of recovering as you can see if you look at rudiger wickes website,go to gallery, then your photographs, estates and look at alg 224j.any advice at all would be very welcome

hi,
years ago i had an estate and had a professional fit me the vinyl as it also had a sunroof, but there was no foam underneath it.

hi,unfortunatley, because my vinyl is torn ,i can see the thin layer of foam between the metal and the vinyl and i can feel it along the entire length of the roof.might mean it has been recovered in the past?thanks yanto

might be "Factory" finish, the estates were never really finished off that well, so it may have had foam put on to hide imperfections in the finish.

A lot of 1970's American cars had vinyl roofs with foam padding so I'd suggest someone who specilaises in Yank tanks might know a contact.
Hope they used waterproof foam ....

thanks for the suggestions,if zebedee is reading this maybe you could have a look at both of your cars to see if i'm on my own!cheers
