WANTED: LT77 5 Speed Gearbox - In good working order.

Hello all

I'm after a decent LT77 5 Speed box, with bellhousing.

Anyone got one kicking about?

Does anyone know where the later ones fitted to Land Rover's are compatible with a 2WD car?

Also, after associated bits i.e pedals etc for converting the P6 to 5 speed.

Many Thanks

Al

It's fairly important you know the mod history of the LT77. All LT77's are not equal! Later ones are alleged to be much stronger. You could also get a R380 from either a Land Rover (but you'd need to buy a 2WD tailshaft housing) or a Sherpa van. The Land Rover to R380 bellhousing also works with the LT77 I believe. The R380 is the modernised version of the LT77 and is available with a huge range of internal ratios. There's a good write up on the various gearboxes on the RPi web site Rpi Transmission Page and on Ashcrofts transmission page Ashcrofts' Transmission Page. "tm-transmissions" usually has large quantitties of LT77 and R380 parts for sale on Ebay (although not as we speak!).

Thanks Chris.

There's a plethora of 4WD R380's and LT77's, but no resources on how to convert them to 2WD.

I'd have no problem then....

The 2WD / 4WD bit is simply the tailshaft housing. Buy one from a Sherpa van, then you are sure you've got all the bits! If you don't like the internal ratios (1st to 3rd and 5th) that come with the van then simply buy the gears you want from TM or Ashcrofts - or let them overhaul for you! I'm old fashioned enough I certainly wouldn't fit a gearbox whose history in the vehicle I didn't know without overhauling it first.
