Water pump bolts.

Hi, I'm trying to get the water pump off and as I guessed, the bolts are corroded in. One has snapped. Any tricks for getting them out without snapping anymore? I am using wd40 and plus gas.

The problem with the longer ones is that the thread is corroded in and is almost 5" from the head of the bolt. By all means wire brush around the head and put plus gas on it, but this will only loosen up the head and not where the main problem is. No matter how much plus gas you use, it isn't going to reach the thread.

I have seen people tighten them slightly first, which can help, or a sharp tap with a hammer directly onto the end of it, can also help to break the grip. If you are going to tap it first, don't do it with the rad in 8)

Hi Phil
I went through the whole issue of water pump , snapped bolts ect a few months ago . First if you haven't all ready take the rad and grill out , you won't stand a chance with them in place . 2nd don't panic (as jonesy would say) it can be sorted . I would say anyone would be lucky to remove the bolts without snapping them , but you may be the lucky type !
If you have the time read my thread " tapping top end " in the v8 section , near the end it says how we delt with the same problem . Also a pic or two .
Best of luck

A sharp thump on the head of the bolt with a buggering stick will certainly help, as would the application of some localised heat from a heat gun. Penetrating oil will only free up the bolt to pump area, but every bit helps. Get a socket on it and tighten it a teeny bit first then back and forth to try to loosen the seizure while it's still nice and warm.
When you put it all back, use Never-Seez on the threads and the shanks of the bolts.

I was lucky with mine, but noticed (after running a tap down and blowing out with commpressed air) that one of the threaded holes actually had a hole into the water jacket, I replaced my bolts with studs I had made up, and the thread with the hole in I used a gasket compound on the threads to seal it up all other threads used anti-sieze grease.
