Here are some pics of the pump and fan assembly that Bruce mentioned above. These are photos from my Rover. The fan sits inside a shroud that attaches to the rear of the radiator, thereby increasing the efficiency by which air is pulled through the radiator.
The fan attaches to a viscous coupling that limits fan rotation to 2500 rpm. When the engine is switched off, the fan can be turned by hand. The proximity of the fan to the radiator core is typically less than 1cm.
