What type of battery should I get for a 1974 V8. I know its got to fit inside the battery box and I have read the manual which says it should be 60 amp/hr at 20 hr. rate. Does anybody have the short code for the correct one. Thanks.

Degsey,
yes, it should be BIG 071 55031 or Celtic 369/069 or Fulmen FX17 or Lucas 071 or Unipart GBY 071 OR WHATEVER FITS! If you can, take your battery box with you and remember where your positive and negative battery positions are! Therer are many others that will fit, just let me know so that I may add them to my list! Thanks.
Regards, John.

If you go for a 071 , make sure you get one without the mounting lugs at the bottom -some do , some don't
The local Euro Car Parts do some good deals on batteries , if a modern one fits , one that starts a turbo diesel would cope with a V8, I should think

Gents,
Got a unipart GBA 071 from my friend who owns a garage and it was too big for the battery box. I gave him the battery box and he came back with a unipart 078 which fitted perfect. This battery is rated at 55 amps but has a high cranking output. It started my car on the key which was a surprise because it had not been started for about two to three months. Cheers.

Fitted GBY/A 071's to all my fleet once when offered with a lifetime guarantee by Unipart. They seem to want to defer on this now, saying that the battery is no longer listed in the current catalogue. My P5B is still waiting for a replacement...anyone else having bother?....

An 071 is too big for my battery box as well and I couldn't find an 078 for love nor money. So I opted to go for one with the largest CCA I could find. I measured up the box and took my tape measure to Halfords with me.

A kind assistant then used his battery gauge to verify the CCA rating on one that fit the box.

It's a bit of a beast, 65 A/hr @ 660 CCA. I think it's meant for a Mitsubushi 3-litre turbo diesel truck thing.

And it turns the engine over a treat.

The only thing they wouldn't offer was a guarantee on the battery.

My previous battery came out of a Corsa and it was very unsuitable, after about four or five unsuccessful attempts to start, the battery would go flat!

I find myself in the position of needing a new battery for my V8.

I have read all the above and have removed my battery box to take with me as I seek out a new one.

Does anyone have anything to add to the previous replies or can suggest a "must have " in the way of batteries.

Any comments/advice welcome.

Dave.

Hi Dave;

The last battery I purchased for a V8 I obtained from Kwik-Fit, in stock & and I had no problems!

Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the Kwik fit idea, I hadn't considered that and had visions of visiting several motor factors before striking lucky.

A 10 minute drive to my local Kwik fit and I was sorted. I must admit I've never had much faith in this type of places but I was pleasantly suprised.

The bloke that served me hadn't heard of a P6 but a quick check in his catalogue revealed that the battery I required was in stock and on the rack in the shop, no searching through the store room.

£64 later I had in my possession an Exide "Expander" with a four year warranty. The model number for anyone interested is W651-XEX, 12V 65AH 510A (EH). Its about 1/2 inch shorter than the battery box and I've used a small rubber block to pack it.

Got it on the car and it started first attempt, despite that car not having been run for 3 months.

Kwik fit explained that if a battery for a car is still being made then they will be able to source it. EXIDE make batteries for most other outlets who then brand them as their own products.

To avoid a flat battery in future, as the car is garaged away from home and I can't always get to use it as much as I'd like (2 children under 2 and shift work) I have now invested in a solar powered trickle charger, £22 brand new on ebay.

I'm fortunate enough that the garage my cars in has a large window that lets in plenty of light, so my charger will simply sit on the window sill.

I'm guessing it will need a certain level of light so will really depend upon your garage.

I must admit I didn't do much research just looked on E bay for a relatively cheap item. Some more expensive versions were described as being weatherproof, so could be mounted on your garage wall/roof/door etc and used with extension leads.

As soon as it arrives I'll put it into action and let you all know if it's any good and worth the money.

All the best
Dave.

Yesterday I went to start my MG TF160, after it had been standing for 3 weeks, in order to take it for its first annual service. Unfortunately the battery was flat. So, I took the battery out of my P6 in order to jump start the TF. I got the jump leads out of the B (I'm a bit greedy on the British cars!) and then went to to attach the lead to the battery in the TF - the clip was broken.

I stood there scratching my head for a few miutes trying to work out what to do next. I then noticed that the battery from the P6 looked very similar to the battery in the TF - connectors were the same type and the same way round. I took the battery out of the TF (it had to come out anyway to be re-charged) and then compared it with the P6 one - the dimensions were identical! So, my TF160 currently has a P6 battery in it.

If you are stuck for a replacement battery it is worth checking out the one used for the MG TF160.

The details of the MG TF160 battery are:

Delphi part no: 19003879
Rover part no: YGD000290
12v 63Ah R.C. 110 min
CCA(-18C) SAE 570A

I dunno if this little tip might help anyone on here but when I'm "Away" (a lot, travelling, you know the sort of thing....) I have a "Digital timer" hooked up to my trusty Battery charger. So, for instance, the Charger will switch on for half an Hour on a Monday, then not on again until a week next Friday for say another half Hour .. It always keeps my Battery up to "Scratch" without worrying about having to remember ...
