What happened to my post?? - De-Dion Failure

Don't know what happened there! I moderated the original and three or four replies, but I've had a number of posts disappear after I've approved them and before they've made it into the topics in the last couple of days. Not us Guv! Any ideas webmaster Richard?

The photos are a wonderful warning of what happens when your dedion elbows let go though, aren't they!

:D ,tell me about it, i've had a romance with the p6 for 30+years and it's never happened to me before, but i guess speed humps, fatigue and age (the car,not me :D ) have taken their toll

The De Dion on the drivers side seems to be the worst of the pair. I was slowly pulling away from traffic lights so was very luck.

I posted a few years ago. photos below. I am going to get my spares ones done when I do the trailing arms.

I have heard of this P6 problem for some time now. What warnings did you all get? As you know I have had a thread recently worrying about stability on long bends. Could it be connected?

Sorry guys, I've not been able to find the reason for the disappearing thread, only to say that it wasn't removed on purpose.

In terms of the de-dion, you need to have a really good poke around the lower mounting, assuming its showing surface rust then don't be afraid to give if it a good "seeing to" with a big screwdriver. My old convertible just had surface rust, but when I cleaned it up it was very close to failure.

pretty scary stuff, I had no warning and the car had been put through MOT at two garages where I got a long list of jobs needing done but nothing about the elbow.

The worst bit is where it mounts to the hub. I had spent months getting this car on the road and never notice any problem with this area was until I had stripped it down.

In this photo the elbow on the left you can see what looks like a dark outline where the hub was, it is bad perforation. The one on the right is a good one I bought from Ian Wilson and had a friend weld a strengthening plate on before getting galvanised.

I said in the post that disappeared that mine had been MOT'd 2 weeks before failure, because I was doing 70, by the time I got stopped it had worn the bottom link eye right through to the rubber, so it needed a bottom link as well.

Ouch! That must have got your hart going. Some good news from my side of the Solent, mine are in very good condition, rushed out there this morning to check. Gave them a good wire brushing. Very little rust on them. They must have been changed in the last few years, in some places there is still the black paint. Finally something I don't need to replace. :D The picture is a bit fuzzy, but its better than it looks in the picture.

I suspect the car has had some hard core work in its past, the rear inner wings are in far too good condition. Once she's on the road I'm going to track down previous owners and find out her history.

All sorted now :D, [img=http://img152.imageshack.us/img152....th.jpg] [img=http://img152.imageshack.us/img152....th.jpg]

maybe this was a blessing in disguise because i found a few other things that Mr MOT man missed

Rear Brake Pads[img=http://img155.imageshack.us/img155....th.jpg]

Drive Shaft U/J, O/S/R Toplink Bushes, N/S/R Bump Stop missing

Toplink Mount in the boot[img=http://img155.imageshack.us/img155....th.jpg]

I've also replaced the rear hub bearings as i suspected one was a bit "iffy", all i have to do tomorrow adjust the rear brakes and a test drive

I have never seen this problem on an Aussie car, probably due to the lack of salt on the roads!
I get all my elbows, not to mention the whole suspension, blasted to bright metal inside and out, then given a magic phosphoric electro coating, then powder coated over the top of that. A bit belt and braces but I really dont want the parts to fail! :p

Cheers

GUY :D

I think its good that they last more than 30 years without problems. Looks to me its a failure due to age and not any bad design issues. And judging by the P6 burnout video on uTube they are really good at stopping wheel tramp, something fords have always suffered from.

Something just accured to me, worthwhile posting a link to this thread on the PC website so JohnS would know he should check the rear on the their P6? Seems they've got a rusty one so may be pointing it out to him. That's if he's not already reading this forum for tips. ;)
