What is this?

Hi everyone - another questrion which will probably leave me  when someone tells me thye answer.

What is this bracket? The one across the front of the motor attached to what looks like an engine steady? The one that looks too big and ends above the dynamo with a mounting hole that looks as if something should be there?

Is it for an optional extra - power steering ? - and is it standard - my car is a 1970 Rover 2000TC.

I have just washed the front of the engine off and found the engine number for the first time ever - and my engine is the original fitted to the car. Fortunately I have the original handbook with all details of keys, chassis no, engine number, supplying dealer etc - which is a good job because I can't find a chassis plate! :(
It is not in the two specified locations - front passenger door pillar or top of right front inner wing. Anywhere else I should look?

Many thanks everyone, sorry to be a nuisance again!

According to my part's book, it's an engine lifting bracket. Nothing's shown in the optional equipment page to bolt there.

Tom.

Your chassis number should be on the left hand inner wing (passenger side) about 6" forward of the bonnet hinge and 2" up. It's a small metal plate about 2.5" x 1/2" and sometimes the numbers are very hard to read, particularly when there is a bit of surface rust. That will be the only location on a 1970 car.
Only the very early cars (to about '66) had the plate in the door pillar and the one on the rh inner wing disappeared about '68 IIRC.

Thankyou all!

Lifting bracket crossed my mind but the mounting hole at the end made me think otherwise. As long as it should be there that's all that counts.

I will have a look for my chassis plate on the left hand inner wing tonight

Many thanks :)

IIRC if you look down the back of the engine, on the off-side, you'll find another engine lifting "hole" the same size as the one on the end of the bracket bolted to the front.

I think the one on the back is part of the block, but memory is hazy.

Its possible the chassis plate has dropped off as they are only spot welded on!!
It may have lodged in the inner wing/wing gap!!
Or if your inner wings have had several thick coats of underseal it may be hidden!
If it has gone, then pop down to your local engineering shop and see if they will knock you one up for a pint!
I made my own replacement, its easy to do if you have some digit punches, but the originals digits are raised, most punches are the indent type.
You can plug weld it on or use a couple of fine brass self tappers.
Mr MOT man cant fail the car if it is missing, question him to look it up if he does!

Thanks everyone I found it - :D

chassis plate on the left hand inner wing just as you said.

Once again the forum is invaluable :!:
