Hi, what oil should I put in my V8? I thought 20w50 but the sticker on the slam panel says 10w30?? Surely not?!

20w50 is right generally i believe. If you do a search on here for zddp you'll find out which brands are suitable. Penrite and millers do classic oils with correct zddp levels but there are others too...

Hi Phil. I've been using the Halfords 20w50 classic motor oil.

I've been using the Halfords 20w50 classic motor oil.

I think last time this was discussed it was decided that the halfords oil wasnt good enough as it is rebranded comma classic oil which doesnt have correct levels of zddp...(Much to my annoyance as i'd filled PAE with it just a week before!)

I've just switched to Morris Golden Film 15W50. Before purchasing, I emailed and was told this:

"Multivis 15W/50 currently contains the following:

Zinc 1050 - 1230 ppm
Phosphorus 1050 - 1130 ppm"

Engine seems to run well on it from cold and keeps good pressure when warm.

I bought mine in a 25l drum as it'll get used in all my cars.

http://www.premierlubricants.co.uk/gold ... 5w-50.html

If you use enough, it works out at about £18.70 for 5 litres now, I'm sure I paid a bit less than that a few months back...

Are there any places that stock oils like this? I bought unipart 20w 50 as I always thought that was a good brand. Esso?? I will have to see what the ingriedients are.

You really need to read the other threads that Rockdemon listed - I don't think we ought to duplicate the brand advice here, otherwise people will get in a muddle. The key issue with both 4 and 8 cylinder P6's is that they are flat tappet engines. The bit about the grade (eg 20/50) is a bit of an also ran. Because they are flat tappet, they need a particular set of additives in the oil which isn't common - that's the ZDDP discussion.

Select your oil on ZDDP content first - after you have found a suitable brand on that basis, then 15/40, 20/50 etc can be selected to suit the way you drive your car. The word "Classic" in the oil name means absolutely zilch!

Hi Phil,
I did an oil change in my 1971 V8 auto earlier this year using Millers classic 20w50 (product code 5119) I did ask the company via e-mail for details of the oil and I found them very helpful, a chap called Ian Mosby sent the details :- Zinc 1000 ppm and phospherous 780 ppm, so I am happy with this and so is the Rover.
Best Regards
Dave

Asking which oil to use (on any forum and for any car) seems to me to be a bit like asking 'which energy tariff should I use'. So many options it becomes a minefield. And it only gets worse with the newer cars and DPFs etc etc

That isn't to say the advice offered is not welcomed, or correct!! Just a blooming nightmare suchthat I've ended up with shelves of different oils for various cars.
